Thanjavur, is the seat of carnatic music and Bhartanatyam (an Indian dance form). Though Thanjavur town has very little to offer the tourist, in the outskirts of the town and in nearby towns and villages one can find ancient temples with some magnificent architecture. Most of these temples date back to the 14th Century and beyond. The idols in some of these temples are believed to have emerged by themselves (Swayambu). Each temple has a unique story behind it .This is the place where Veenai Tanammal originated ,and even soolamangalam sisters who sang the kandhar shasthi kavasam in praise of lord murugan hail from a village called soolamangalam in thanjavur. thiruvaiyaru, thyaaga brahmaam padaitha place, every year just on the month of marzgazhi end or thai beginning on suklabashabam day,all famous music experts meet in a common place in thiruvaiyaaru and sing the famous pancharathna composition of saint thyagaraja in order to pay homage to the same and honour him. This programme in vocal is followed by flute by Dr.N.Ramani first, then it is followed by naadhaswaram and then vocal full programme is coordinated by violin maestro kunnakudi vaidhyanathan.Apart from tamil speaking people this place has wide number of marathi speaking people also because this place was very prominent during marathiya emperor shivaji period
Most often people who visit these temples come here because they were asked to perform these rituals by Saint Agastya (who lived during the time of the Gods!) in his palm leaf manuscripts. These manuscripts tell you your past (including your parents names!) etc and your future just by your thumb impression. One such place where these manuscripts are preserved is in Kanchipuram a town near Chennai.
Thanjavur is also reachable by train from other Indian cities. 'Thanjavur Junction' is the station to alight. There are daily trains from/to Chennai. For train timings and on-line reservations (within India) visit the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation's website.
There are several state and private buses that ply daily from Bangalore, Chennai, Madurai and Tiruchy. The journey from Bangalore and Chennai takes about 7 hours and there are over-night buses with reclining seats.
