Terres de l'Ebre
Terres de l'Ebre (Ebre Lands) is a region in Catalonia. It's the southeast region of Catalonia and is crossed by the Ebre river since gets out of Aragon until pours its water to the Mediterranean sea.
The Terres de l'Ebre offer a wide variety of landscapes (Natural Park of Delta de l’Ebre, Natural Park of Ports, Ebre river, coast, plain and mountain. All those possibilities, together with a typical Mediterranean weather, make of Terres de l'Ebre a spot to discover and lowly exploited by the big touristic mass.
One of the spots more appreciated by tourists are the areas of "coast and sea" and we can find here one of the more impressive natural spectacles of Terres de l'Ebre where Ebre waters fight with Mediterranean waters at the mouth of the river, giving as a result large sand beaches with very low visitor density, where we can have a calm and intimacy hard to find elsewhere. Very close to those beaches is the Natural Park of Delta de l'Ebre, the biggest humid area of Catalonia, with a surface of 320 km2.
Another dimension of Terres de l'Ebre is the mountain and plain. We can observe here the traditional economic legacy in this land, the primary sector, with vineyards, fruit trees and olive trees. We must point out the millennial olive trees in Montsia, as the name indicates, those trees accompany several generations of inhabitants since many years. Don't forget the Natural Park of Ports, the second natural park with more extension of Catalonia, with a great variety of flora and fauna.
It's also outstanding the identity culture, which possibly originated because different civilizations grounded in the Iberic peninsula arrived to this area guided by the river Ebre. The civilizations passing Terres de l'Ebre left many elements as the remarkable rock paintings of Ulldecona and el Perelló, declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
The Museum of de les Terres de l'Ebre has created the network: Ebre Natura & Cultura, including several museums and heritage interpretation centers, which manages the local heritage and natural resources. Among them are: the Museum of les Terres de l'Ebre and the Archaeological Park of La Carrova in Amposta, the Interpretation Centre of the Iberians Culture and the Iberian settlement of La Moleta del Remei in Alcanar, the Montsià Interpretation Centre in Freginals, the La Plana Interpretation Center in Santa Barbara , and the future Museum of la Mar de l'Ebre in Sant Carles de la Rapita.
In the Terra Alta region, its also interesting the Areas of the Ebro Battle, dedicated to remember the bloody Ebro Battle which took place in theese land during the Spanish Civil War.
Finally, you could not leave these lands without tasting its gastronomy, based on quality products as the rice with D.O. Montsià, the oil D. O. Baix Ebre - Montsià, the wine D.O. Terra Alta or the clementines of Alcanar considered IGP (Protected Geographic Indication). Not to mention the eels and the Delta duck, the fish and seafood in the coast, the artichokes and citrics at the plain and the crestó in the mountain.
The nearest airport is Reus, with airlines as Ryanair. Alternatively, Terres de l'Ebre are equidistant of Barcelona, Valencia and Zaragoza.
If you decide to spend a few days Montsià here you have a series of recommendations to do not leave without visiting the identity places of the region, so that you can enjoy all the charm and understand this place so characteristic. The beginning of the journey in the Montsià area could be a visiting the Natural Park of the Ebro Delta, the land of birdwatchers and nature. In this alluvial plain can be found as contradictory landscapes as the dunes of Punta de la Banya, l'Encanyissada wetlands,an infinity of rice fields and forests, which allow the visitor to practice lots of activities related to nature, wildlife, sports and quietness. There is a fantastic network of bicycle paths, where you can reach most interesting areas and are suitable for the whole family due to its great plain. You can visit two museums centres wich are also information points of the Ebro Delta, Eco-museum located in Deltebre and La Casa de Fusta, located at the Encanyissada lagoon.
After visiting the Delta, almost without leaving the park, we can visit the Interpretation Centre of les Barraques del Delta located Sant Jaume d'Enveja. There we can discovered how they were made the houses of people who lived and worked in the Ebro Delta. The next stop is Amposta, the capital of the region. We can't forget walking by the river Ebro including Amposta's impressive bridge and visiting the Museum of Terres de l'Ebre which host two permanent exhibitions: Terres de l'Ebre: from prehistory to the Middle Ages, showing the archaeological legacy of Terres de l'Ebre from prehistory to the Middle Ages; and The Ebro waterway that evokes more recent memory, how this great river has influenced the landscape and people of low Ebro lands. On the other hand, to see one of the best examples of the historical legacy of the region, you can not miss the Moleta del Remei located on a hilltop with magnificent views near the town of Alcanar. from here you can start the Route of the Iberians, and also there is an Interpretation Centre in the old Iberians in the O'Connor house of Alcanar. Ulldecona is Another must to visit, where you can find one of the most important cultural icon of el Montsià, The Cave Paintings of els "Abrics de l'Ermita" declarated World Heritage by the UNESCO in 1998. They are the most important Levantine art paintings of Catalonia and part of the rock paintings itinerary promoted by the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia. In Ulldecona, there is also another historical legacy, but in this case it is a natural one. In the Arion property can be found some of the best examples of ancient olive trees, with its impressive size and its wrinkled shape which reflects their age. An other recommendation is to explore the craft of the Montsià ares. Although over time these jobs as uniques are beeing lost, in the Montsià area we still can find this tradition. We can visit the Interpretation Center of Pottery Terracotta to see different styles of craft, buy handicrafts and enjoy a demonstration by the master craftsman.
At the Furniture Country, name brand of La Senia due to its furniture manufacturers, we can find lots of factories and selling furniture that make us understand the tradition of the wood of this town. Very close from La Senia we can find Mas de Barberans, to discover the unique recovery of an ancient job l'Art de la Pauma. We can visit the "LLatadors" workshop, see how they work and how to create handmade pieces like earrings, necklaces, bags, etc..
in the countryside of the Montsià area, it is also a valuable network of routes covering natural and cultural areas with the presence of human activities and traditional remains of the past. The network Camins del Sud covers some of most scenic areas and ethnocultural of el Barranc de la Galera, the drylands of el Montsià the Serra de Godall, la Senia River and the Serra del Montsià, which gives its name to the region.
The final adventure could be visiting the Natural Park of els Ports i la Tinença de Benifassà, where can be founf the most southern Europe's beech forest and a large number of Hispanic goats that are certainly the symbol of this mountain. In la Senia we can find the Information Center of els Ports where we get informed of the itineraries and the existing recreation areas.
