Terni [1] is a city in the Italian region of Umbria. It is mainly an industrial town and as a result was heavily bombed by the Allies during the Second World War. In the 19th Century it was known as the "Manchester of Italy". In its municipality lies the Cascata delle Marmore, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe (165 m) which was created by the ancient Romans in the year 271 a.C.. It is just 8 km away from the city centre. Terni is also known for being Saint Valentine's birthplace. The remains which belonged to the saint of lovers are conserved in its own dedicated basilic.

Other airports are Rome Ciampino (116 km) and Rome Fiumicino (134 km). [edit] By carFrom Rome, take the A1 Autostrada, leaving at Orte and follow the SS675 to Terni. There are 104 km between Terni and the Italian capital. Distances from other main cities: Florence 228 km, Naples 304 km. [edit] By trainTrains run regularly from the Rome-Termini station. If you are coming from the north, take a train that stops at Orte to connect to Terni station. On a regional train, the ticket from Rome costs 6.80 euro. Average journey time is 1 hour and 3 minutes. [edit][add listing] SeeAs a result of the bombing much of the city was heavily damaged. Consequently, Terni is now considered more interesting for its post-war architecture than its older structures. It is a good place to stay if you are planning to visit the beautiful Umbrian surroundings.
The are also ruins of a Roman Amphitheatre and old town walls , together with some medieval buildings.

These artificial waterfalls were built by the Romans. Whitewater rafting trips are available.[2]] A few km further east is Lake Piediluco, which hosts the Italian National Rowing Center and plays host to rowing teams from all over the world because of its almost ideal rowing conditions. Within the municipality, 13 km away from the city centre, there is also the ancient Roman city of Carsulae, an important archaeological park which lies close to the thermal town of Sangemini. Spoleto, known for its Festival of the Two Worlds, Narni and Todi are within easy reach by car as are many other fascinating towns in Umbria.
