Terni

Terni [1] is a city in the Italian region of Umbria. It is mainly an industrial town and as a result was heavily bombed by the Allies during the Second World War. In the 19th Century it was known as the "Manchester of Italy". In its municipality lies the Cascata delle Marmore, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe (165 m) which was created by the ancient Romans in the year 271 a.C.. It is just 8 km away from the city centre. Terni is also known for being Saint Valentine's birthplace. The remains which belonged to the saint of lovers are conserved in its own dedicated basilic. By car From Rome, take the A1 Autostrada, leaving at Orte and follow the SS675 to Terni. There are 104 km between Terni and the Italian capital.
