Travel news links to more info point nowhere[edit]

Moved from shared:Tech:Travel news links to more info point nowhere

In the Travel news page, the "More" links point to anchors named after the news item, but these anchors do not exist.

Two problems here:

  1. There's no reason to point a "More" link at the section you just read.
  2. Even if one did intend to send readers to the same content they just read, there are no anchors on those section headings, so these links end up doing nothing except creating false hope. So if they're actually pointing to more in-depth information about the news item, it would be ideal if they weren't displayed at all.
Hey there, I see your point. the reason we have that is that on the en:Main Mage, if you click "more" then you are taken to en:Travel news where you can read more news blurbs... but perhaps when we copy the blurb into the travel news page, we shouldn't leave the "more" button there, since from there it goes nowhere. Hmmm. – cacahuate talk 20:49, 7 November 2007 (EST)
I too had my false hope dashed the first time I clicked--and that was from the main page. The "more" link gives the impression that we're linking to more news on that particular news item. Could we just change the link text to "more news" and then remember not to copy it into the travel news page? --Peter Talk 01:18, 8 November 2007 (EST)
The link is generated by the template itself. It might be possible to hack up some template magic that checks if the current page == "Travel news" and skips the link if it is... Jpatokal 01:23, 8 November 2007 (EST)
How about to change the design and usage of en:Template:Newsitem as follows?
  1. Make the news headline an anchor in the template by adding id attribute to <div> tag of News headline.
  2. Add the 4th parameter with some conditionals to the template to trim looong newsitems.
  3. Use the template just like we trim blog post on WT Extra by using the delimiter "<!--break-->" (without the quotes).
    1. For short newsitems — put whole sentences into the 3rd parameter and not specify the 4th parameter; as a result, "(more...)" link doesn't appear.
    2. For long newsitems — put leading sentences into the 3rd parameter and put trailing sentences into the 4th parameter; as a result,
      1. on Main Page, "(more...)" link appears intead of trailing sentences.
      2. on Travel news page, trailing sentences appear intead of "(more...)" link.
If above is unclear, I can provide a sample for you by moving my test pages to somewhere, maybe to subpages of this page. -- Tatata 01:58, 8 November 2007 (EST)
Does this need to exist as a bug report? Or is it something Wikitravellers can do themselves, and therefore a useful discussion to merge to en:Template talk:Newsitem? --Peter Talk 01:10, 21 March 2008 (EDT)
I'll take that resounding silence as a yes. --Peter Talk 21:15, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
I guess I should have read the discussion before making my most recent edit to this page, but I've made a change to the template, so that on Travel news only, the headings appear as actual headings, so that you can use section links from Main Page to get to here. Maybe I'll try to remove the "more" link on the Travel news page too at a later date. JYolkowski 19:32, 27 November 2008 (EST)
I've also changed the templates so that the "more" link isn't displayed on Travel news and also to fix a problem from my change two days ago. On Travel news, these changes use the CSS "visibility" and "display" properties, so if someone's browser doesn't render CSS properly and this looks bad please speak up and we can revert to the version from November 27th. Outside Travel News page[edit]

First of all the template page looks horrible, perhaps a little info about it needs to be added? The Template:newsitem appears to only work on the Travel news page, is that correct? If so, the ability to recognize the template needs to be added to the archive pages, 2009, [[Travel news/2008|2008, etc. Otherwise, the archive pages simply display the title of the newsitem and when you click on that title it redirects you to the Travel news page, where of course that article no longer exists.
