In the summer (late June - August) you can go to a place called Fjærholmen for a swim in the Oslo-fjord. The temperature in the sea will normally be 18- 22 degrees. Fjærholmen is 10 km away from Tønsberg oute on an iland, reachable by bus or care. The same place will also be the area where all have their private saling boat and if you are lucky may be somebody will bring you along for a sailing tour. Just be brave and ask!

The perfect summer activity for a family: During the summer you can also take a small ferry going out (1 hour)  to an iland in the Oslofjord called "Bolærne" wich will be an old sea fortrage, opened for the public in 2005.The ferry will go from "Brygga ved kanalen". You can stay there for days in a quite inexpensive hotel system (In the same rooms and beds  where the soldiers used to live!), and you can as well eat all meals in the resturant. The price per person will depend on how many sharing the same room,(max 4!)but somewhere around 30-60 EUR per day per person will give you an idea. You can strole along the iland - or dive directly from the rocks or just sit in the small harbour looking on the traffic of private summer boats. On top of the iland there will be a small wiepoint where you can see all the cruiseboats and ferries pasing on the way to and from Oslo.  Ask the locals for advice how to find updated information? There will be a tourist information office in the town near "Brygga" during peak season.

Understand

The old name of this town was Tunsberg - the oldest town in Norway. The city has about 35.000 inhabitants and lies in the county of Vestfold. Tønsberg is also surrounded by some of the countys major tourist attractions like old viking graves and museums.

There are plenty of options for daytrips where both residents and visitors can enjoy a wide range of landscapes.

In summer cities like Tønsberg is among the most pleasant places to be. The people are easy going and very friendly and cultural life is rich. After Oslo, Tønsberg has the most liveliest summertime day and nightlife in Norway.

Tønsberg is also a well known and frequently visited vacation spot for Norwegians.

Get in

Vestfold's international Torp Airport (TRF) has flights to some major and minor cities around Norway and Europe, including Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London, Milan, Gothenburg, Marseille, Pisa, Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow, Nice, Alicante, Malaga, Milano and Stockholm. Tønsberg is located 10 km from TFR.

The Norwegian State Railway serves Tønsberg on the Oslo-Skien line (Vestfoldbanen).

Buy

Go to "Roar i Bua" a popular seafood shop just in front of Brygga hotell and buy some fresh shrimps (15 EUR a kilo) and sit on the quey and eat them naturell and throw the leftover to the seagils. If you are into "Heavy shopping" and it is a rainy day or winter - I would recomend the shoppingmall called "Farmandstredet" close to the central bus station. Shops enough for a full day shopping maraton!

Eat

Go to "Havariet" down at seaside. Good food at a fair price and in the summer you can enjoy the summer outside.
