Get in

Stepanakerts soon to be finished airport.

An airport is under construction and flights from Yerevan are supposed to start soon, altough a fall 2011 deadline was missed. The only carrier which have announced they will fly are the state-owned Artsakh Air with their newly bought Bombardier CRJ200 jets. One-way tickets will start at 16,000 drams ($45 USD).

There is one daily bus from Yerevan, the buses are brand new but the journey are slow and can take up to eight hours. Tickets costs 4,500 drams.

Driving is also possible, the M-12 highway connects with Armenia and is the most reasonable way to reach Stepanakert. A more adventurous traveller can opt to drive throuh the Karvajar pass but it's longer and the roads are in a dilapidated condition. To reach the pass, follow road M-11 on the Armenian side. Both roads offers amazing views of wild life, deep forests, dramatic cliffs and several ancient monuments on the way. Few people speak anything other then Armenian so prepare yourself with a dictionary.

There are many taxis through out the city. The taxis range from old to brand new Mercedes.

See

  • We Are Our Mountains National Memorial. Also called "Grandma and Grandpa", the memorial features an elderly Artsakh couple.


Do

There are many things to do in Stepanakert. There are many museums that show the history of the region. The city has seen a large growth in the number of museums. There are many parks in Stepanakert that are amazing. Many of the parks are brand new and have many nice statues and memorials. It is very common to see children playing in the parks. People in Stepanakert are very kind so they will not mind if you want your children to play with their children. You should also take a visit to the government buildings and multiple universities.

Buy

There are many souvenier shops through the city. There is a very nice one in the lobby of hotel armenia. When you are in Stepanakert there are many art galleries and rug places. Another amazing place to buy beautiful art that is historic is Shushi.

Eat

There are so many cafes through out the city. It is not very hard to find one at all. There is a great restaurant in the lobby of the Armenia Hotel and in the center of the city.

Armenia Hotel in Stepanakert is located on Republic Square, in the heart of Stepanakert. Armenia Hotel in Stepanakert has 54 guest rooms, all furnished according to international standards, beautifully decorated with prevailing mild and relaxing colors. It also has a sauna and big rooms.

Nairi Hotel is situated in countryside, away from urban noise and dispose to resting.The hotel has a very beautifull view to the Karabakh mountains. But the approach to it is a popular hangout place for feral youth, who may give you a hard time.

Park Hotel Artsakh is a brand new hotel opened in May 2011. It has great Karabakh architecture and has many modern amenities.

If you're lucky, you may also bump into an old woman on the street. If you ask her where a good place to sleep is, there is a good chance that she will charge you $4 to sleep in her modest guest house.

Get out

There are many different cities that are nearby Stepanakert. The city of Shushi is a great place to go and has a lot of traditional armenian homes and churches. Shusha contains many Armenian cultural monuments, while the surrounding territories include also many ancient Armenian village. The city is walled and has many historical churches and also has a few mosques, which are no longer operating. However, tourists are welcome to go in and see them. Aghdam is also a very good place to see. It is an abandoned city, which is not a common site. There are thousands of old houses, but no one lives there. There is a old mosque there as well. Visitors are welcome there. Tour guides will be welcomed to take people

Surprisingly, free wifi is available in a small park close to the main square, where the Armenia hotel is situated. Several Internet cafés are also present in the city.
