Stenness is in the Orkney Islands, Scotland.

Understand[edit]

The village of Stenness is situated on the main A965 between Kirkwall and Stromess, but is best known for it's UNESCO World Heritage Listed Neolithic sights.

Get in[edit]

By bus[edit]

Frequent Orkney Buses (part of Rapsons[1]) pass through the village and next to some of the sights along the A965 between Kirkwall and Stromness. During the summer, special tourist buses pause for 5 minutes at the Stones of Stenness and 15 minutes at the Ring of Brodgar before continuing on the Skara Brae.

Get around[edit]

The main sights at Stenness are on or within 1km of the A965. You can walk between them, although it's more pleasant to drive as there is no footpath beside the main road.

See[edit][add listing]

  • Maeshowe Beside the A965. 01856 761606 [2]. This chambered tomb is over 5000 years old and considered the finest in North-Western Europe. Facing the winter solstic, the entrance passageway leads to a near perfect interior complete with runes left behind by 12th century Viking crusaders. Regular guided tours £5.50. It is advisable to book ahead at busy times.
  • Standing Stones of Stenness About 400m off the A965. Four stones remain from a 12 strong stone circle, dating from about 2500BC. Another stone is atmosperically set beside the bridge between the Loch of Harray and Loch of Stenness.
  • Barnhouse - the remains of a neolithic village reached by a footpath from the Stones of Stenness. Beware of the midges!
  • Ring of Brodgar About 1000m from the A965 on the B9055. Stunningly set between two lochs, 27 out of 60 standing stones remain in a circle surround by a ditch and smaller groups of stones and mounds.
