Samraong is a city in North-western Cambodia.

Understand

The capital of Oddar Meanchay Province, Samraong is a regional hub that travellers in hinterland North-western Cambodia will pass through or use as a base. It is also the Cambodian town nearest the O'Smach/Chong Chom border crossing with Thailand.

Get in

Highway 68 is now paved and heads south, linking the town with Kralanh on National Highway 6 and hence Siem Reap.

Unpaved highway 56 runs west from Samraong, to Sisophon via Banteay Chhmar. The ride is pretty good in the dry season and respectable speed can be obtained. In the wet season, travelling may be much slower, particularly closer to Samraong.

There is also a road heading east to Anlong Veng.

Paramount Angkor Transport serves the town with buses. Shared taxis to any of the above towns can be arranged near the market.

There is a border crossing with Chong Chom in Thailand's Surin Province at O'Smach, about 35 km north of Samraong.

Get around

See the town on foot. Motodops are willing to drive to the border.

See

Do

Recover from or prepare for the onslaught of back-country travel: laundry, internet and ATM are available.

Buy

Acleda Bank has an ATM in the big, grey office building which dominates the town.
