Saami is the language of the Saami people who dwell in the Lapland. This region consists of northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Komi peninsula in Russia. Northern Saami, the most spoken Saami language and one used in this phrasebook, is spoken mainly in Northern Norway, Sweden, and parts of Finland. It is used often in cities and towns such as Kiruna (Giron) and Karasjok (Karasjohká). It is a Finno-Ugric language which some linguistic similarities with Finnish and Karelian, though these languages are not muturally understandable with Saami. Kildin Saami, the language spoken in the Russian Lapland, is similar to the Komi language which is also a Finno-Ugric language spoken near the Russian Lapland.
