Qasigiannguit is a city in Western Greenland.
The town of Qasigiannguit is known for its fishing industry, particularly crab and halibut. It is situated on the southeastern part of Disko Bay. The town is home to Greenland’s oldest museum; the building the museum is in was built in 1734.
The easiest way to get to Qasigiannguit depends of winter or summer. During winther, there is flight(helicopter) connections from Ilulissat&Aasiaat. There also flights out to Qeqertarsuaq and Aasiaat. During summer and fall Qasigiannguit can also be reach by ship from Ilulissat&Aasiaat.
If you have been travelling with a passenger ferry from the south then Aasiaat would be the easiest place to change ships.
The heliport is located in walking distance from the town centre. The best way to really see the city is on foot. Qasigiannguit is a small town, so this is not difficult. In the winter months, travel can also be done on skis, by snowmobile or dogsled.
The period of midnight sun in Qasigiannguit is from May 27th to July 18th. It is shorter than in other areas of Greenland due to the distance from the Arctic Circle, the further north the town, the longer the midnight sun.
The museum in Qasigiannguit is housed in the oldest building in Greenland, dating back to 1734. The museum houses several artifacts that trace back thousands of years to Greenlanders from generations ago. There are even artifacts from the extremely advanced Saqqaq culture.
The icebergs in Qasigiannguit can be heard from very far away, as they rumble past the town on their way to the Atlantic. Sailing between Qasigiannguit and Ilulissat is a great way to get a chance to get close to these lumbering giants in the sea.
All year around, a recommended walking trip is to walk east of the town, pass the museum, the heliport, the cementary, and continue to the lake, which will be completely frozen during the winter.
There are several trails around Qasigiannguit ideal for hiking. Some of them are as long as 30km, but there are also several shorter ones for single day hikes. The scenery is amazing as hikers travel up the fjord.
Sailing from Qasigiannguit is the perfect way to get the most out of a sailing trip. In a single voyage you can expect to see icebergs in Disko Bay, different types of seals and birds as well as the possibility of seeing a few different types of whales.
In the summer time long trousers, long sleeves, a hat and a mosquito-net is a must. In the winter time, it is important to wear proper clothing.
