Petäjävesi [1] is a small village in Central Finland. Its main claim to fame is its wooden church dating back to 1765, a World Heritage Site as an exemplary piece of Scandinavian wooden architecture.

Get in[edit]

The nearest major city is Jyväskylä. Petäjävesi is on the Haapamäki-Jyväskylä railway line, and also accessible by Matkahuolto buses.

Get around[edit]

Public transport is limited to a twice-daily bus, so it's best to bring your own wheels.

  • Old Church of Petäjävesi (Petäjäveden vanha kirkko) [2]. Open June-August only, unless prior reservations are made at least two days earlier (tel. 040-582 2461).
  • Karikkoselkä. A meteor impact crater, now a perfectly spherical lake.

There are several holiday cottages and farms offering lodging in the vicinity.
