Palanga is a popular seaside resort at the Baltic sea in Lithuania. Palanga has over the years been of major strategic importance, no importance whatsoever, part of Latvia, and up until the mid-19th century and subsequent invention of the seaside holiday, a small fishing village. Modern Palanga is a year-round health resort, but is famed more for what happens during the short summer period between the beginning of June and September. During this time the population balloons from a regular 20,000, to 100,000 or more, especially during the weekends.
