Nizhny Tagil  (Russian: Ни́жний Таги́л NEEZH-nee tuh-GEEL) is the second largest city in Sverdlovsk Oblast (Yekaterinburg is the largest) with a population of about 350,000 people. It is situated on the river Tagil, the river which was chosen as the way to get to Siberia by the famous Russian explorer Yermak. The city was founded on 7th October 1722 by Antufii Demidov and it celebrated its 285th anniversary in 2007.
