Nizhny Tagil

Nizhny Tagil [1] is the second largest city in Sverdlovsk Oblast (Yekaterinburg is the largest) with a population of about 350,000 people. It is situated on the river Tagil, the river which was chosen as the way to get to Siberia by the famous Russian explorer Yermak. The city was founded on 7th October 1722 by Antufii Demidov and it celebrated its 285th anniversary in 2007.

Nizhny Tagil is an industrial city and is one of the main metallurgical centers in Russia. There are 14 big metallurgical enterprises, three of which are:

  • Nizhny Tagil Metallurgical Complex
  • Ural Carriage Building Complex
  • Ural Chemical Plastmass Enterprise

The city is the site of many Arms and other industrial exhibitions, the most popular of which is the Ural Expo-Arms Exhibition.
