It is a temple town and is on the banks of the river Kapila (Kabini), and lies at a distance of 23 km from the city of Mysore. Nanjangud is famous for Srikanteshwara Temple. Nanjangud is also called as "Dakshina Kashi" (southern Kashi).
You can reach Nanjangud by road from Mysore. Catch a state transport bus from Mysore or hire a taxi. Nearest Airport is Mysore which is ironically only 16Kms from Nanjangudu. You can reach Mysore by various trains or by a state transport bus. Both are very convenient and comfortable.
One of the biggest Hindu - Shiva temple - Nanjundeshwara Temple. Shiva took poison to save the universe and the poison got stuck in his throat turning it blue. "Nanju" means poison, unda means the one who drank and Ishwara forms the word Nanjundeshwara.
Go around the temple. Buy some handicrafts. Go to river Kapila, you will find lot of boats which are pretty safe and enjoy a ride in the waters. Swimming is not advised as the flow river is pretty high throughout the year.
Only South Indian food is available in the small restaurants near the temple.A variety of Banana, called 'Rasabale", very tasty is available here.
Hotels and Choultries are available mainly to cater the pilgrims.
The temple has a government IB which is very comfortable, but you need permission to stay there. Temple also has a dormitory which is well maintained.
Lot of private lodges have opened up which are good for a nights stay.
