View from the Olympiaberg on the olympic stadium.
The Olympic area also known as due to the large and popular shopping center (Olympic Einkaufzentrum) is a district of Munich. This district has it's place seared into history as a turning point of peace and terrorism. Less than 30 years after the Holocaust and the defeat of Holocaust Munich, the birthplace of the Nazi party held the 20th Summer Olympics and built an entire park and several stadiums to host the Olympics in this district. Many people saw the Olympics as a turning point for Munich, especially with the Israeli olympic team participating in the games, however, the massacre of Israeli athletes in the Olympic village and at the Fürstenfeldbrücke NATO airport greatly astonished the world and cast a dark shadow over the district.
Take the U3 to "Olympiazentrum" or the U1 to "OEZ" sometimes refered to "Olympic Einkaufzentrum."
31 Connollystraße This is located in the former Olympic village, there is a small marker that idicates that this building was the site of the Black September hostage situation, and site where several Israeli Olympic team members were murdered.
The vast Olympiapark was built for the 1972 Olympic Summer Games and is still a very active and popular place for all kinds of sports and events.
Olympiaturm (Olympic Tower) - the more than 200 m high tower gives an amazing view over the complete city, and on a clear day you can see the Alps.
BMW Museum, Petuelring 130, +49-89-38223307, . Every day, 10am-20pm. Currently closed for renovation until summer 2007. Instead you can visit a temporary exhibition next to the Olympiaturm. €2/€1,50.
Tollwood - Very nice and relaxed festival with a large alternative market where everything is sold from Asian interior stuff to hand made rings. The festival comprises several tents where music and theatre is played. While some performances are for free, tickets have to be bought for the major venues. You will also find lots of international food stalls and bars here. It's a great place to hang around. There's a summer Tollwood which takes place in the Olympiapark from mid June to the beginning of July for four weeks. The winter Tollwood takes place on the Theresienwiese from the last week of November until Christmas. It's a great alternative to the commercial Christmas markets.
Olympiaberg - If there is a concert in the olympic stadium and you didn't manage to get tickets (or you think they are too expensive) climb on the hill near the stadium. You will have a great view on the stadium and hear all the music. Take a blanket with you, some food and of course local beer.
