Monterey County [1] contains a sizable part of the Central Coast of California and the southern half of Monterey Bay.

While best known for the wild coastline of Big Sur and the historic Monterey Bay, Monterey County includes the rugged Coastal Range and the inland corridor of U.S. Highway 101.

Regions[edit]

  • Monterey Peninsula forms the southern end of Monterey Bay. The towns of Monterey and Carmel lie here, as does the tourist resort destination Pacific Grove.
  • Big Sur is the sparsely settled coastal region directly south of Carmel. It is served by Route 1.
  • Salinas Valley is predominantly an agricultural area, with many wineries.
  • Carmel Valley is a popular wine tourism area.
