Mono County

Mono County is in the Eastern Sierra region of California. The Eastern Sierra embodies the classic images of the American West made popular in High Plains Drifter, Rawhide and How the West Was Won, all of which - and many more Hollywood westers - were shot here. The term would technically include the entire eastern slope of California and Nevada's Sierra Nevada though, in practice, most Californians and Nevadans think of the eastern escarpment of the Sierra in California's Inyo and Mono Counties, from Pearsonville to Topaz, when they hear "Eastern Sierra." Significant features of this region include Mt. Whitney (14,496 ft/4,418 m), tallest mountain in the lower 48 states; the Owens River Valley, one of the deepest valleys in the U.S.; Palisade Glacier, southernmost glacier in the U.S.; the John Muir Wilderness, The Ansel Adams Wilderness, Mammoth Mountain, Mono Lake, Yosemite National Park's east entrance and the Walker River.
