Matara is a city in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. Because the Southern Province consists of three districts and the city of Matara stands in between Galle and Hambantota which are the other districts of Southern Province. And its 160km away from the Capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo.
Its a 4 hour journey by road and its approximately 5 hours by train. Buses are the common method to get in there, but train is the cheapest and there are trains which goes to Matara all the way. The cost is below Rs.200. If anyone considering to hire a vehicle, it also possible and it'll charge a high amount.
River Nilwala runs through the town and falls into the sea. The history of Matara dates back to the Anuradhapura period. Matara is full of natural scenic beauty, which is an attraction to the tourists. Matara is a coastal town surrounded by the loveliest beach and its the main attraction. Also Dutch fort and the ruins of Dutch controlled era make Matara spectacular.The river Nilwala has fertilized the whole area where one can see the stretch of paddy fields and tea estates with plantation of spices also taking an important place. The sandy and safe beaches are an asset in this area where fishing industry too is flourishing providing a source of income and supply of fish. The combination of these multi faceted natural resources has made Matara a popular tourist resort. Matara city area with 8.8 square kilometers in extent. It is divided into fifteen wards or local units for the purpose of local administration. It has a population of about 76493 and the temperature is 30c. And not to forget the Dondra light house, the southernmost point of Sri Lanka.
Staying there is not a problem because the cheap and safe tourist hotels all around.
Its coastal road to Matara along the lovely beach side. There are lot of tourist attraction between the way and Kalutara Temple, Hikkaduwa coral gardens, Ambalangoda antique shops, Galle fortress, Unawatuna, Mirissa & Weligama beaches are amazing and etc.
