Labrador City and Wabush, the twin towns commonly referred to as Labrador West, are situated on the rich iron ore deposits of the Labrador trough on the mainland portion of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Nestled in the iron rich rolling hills and between numerous lakes Labrador West is truly a dichotomy of pristine wilderness and industrial development.
Early in the l96O's the town of Labrador City was built to accommodate employees of the Iron Ore Company of Canada and likewise, the town of Wabush, just 5 km away was built by Wabush Mines. The two towns were incorporated in 1961 and 1967 respectively.
Development of the area's impressive iron ore bed required skilled workers. Good salaries and benefits and an excellent quality of life lured individuals to what was in the early 196O's, a truly remote region. People came from all over the world for what they anticipated to be a year or two. These early pioneers have or are now approaching retirement with second and even third generations residing in the region. With over forty years experience in mining and industrial supply, the region proudly boasts "We Know Mining." Serviced land is available for industrial and light industrial uses and a commercial highway provides easy access to all transportation links.
To newcomers, Labrador West is a mosaic of the pleasantly unexpected. Labrador City and Wabush are thriving modern towns with many amenities only associated with larger centers.
The cost of living in Labrador West is among the lowest in Canada while residents enjoy a high standard of living. Housing is affordable and the region has the advantage of low electrical rates. Groceries are reasonably priced. The communities are serviced by four large grocery stores that aggressively compete to offer residents the lowest prices in town. Consumers can select from a huge variety of fresh grocery items at excellent prices. Labrador West has the best retail shopping in all of Labrador with many national chains servicing Labrador City, Wabush, Churchill Falls and residents of other Labrador communities via the Trans Labrador Highway.
Medical and educational facilities are excellent. Crime rates are among the lowest in Canada. Recreational facilities are exceptional including an 18 hole golf course, an Arts and Culture Centre that regularly features international talents, world class X-country ski trails, alpine skiing, indoor swimming pool, skating rinks, gymnasiums, restaurants, bars and taverns. The communities boast a high level of volunteerism, sports enthusiasts, musicians, artists and artisans.
Labrador City and Wabush are the most accessible communities in all of Labrador twelve months of the year via road, air and rail.
