For the mainly urban North Jæren, see the articles about Stavanger, Sandnes, Sola and Randaberg. This article deals with the rural part referred to as Jæren in common speech, defined as Klepp, Time and Hå municipalities.
Jæren is one of the traditional regions of Rogaland, Norway. Its flat landscape stands out from the otherwise hilly West Norway. Combined with a warm climate, this has made Jæren one of the most important agricultural areas in Norway. What is most likely to be of interest to the traveller however, is the long stretches of sandy beaches. In addition to natural beauty these beaches provide a surfing mecca, regularly rated among the world's top surfing spots.

Understand[edit]

Talk[edit]

As in the rest of the country, anyone under the age of 60 should speak English fluently, and possibly have limited proficiency in German, French and/or Spanish. Nynorsk is commonly the preferred variety of written Norwegian at Jæren.

Get in[edit]

By plane[edit]

The closest airport is Stavanger Airport, Sola. Jaerlines provides connections from the airport to Kleppe and Bryne half-hourly morning and afternoon on weekdays as well as afternoon and night on Sundays. No service on Saturdays. 150/250 NOK (one-way/return), student/senior 100 NOK, child 50 NOK. Complete schedule available at [1] (Norwegian language only).

By train[edit]

Local trains between Stavanger and Egersund pass through Jæren half-hourly during the day and stop at major towns and villages on the way, as well as some smaller ones. Long distance trains (Regiontog) continuing from Egersund to Kristiansand only stop at Bryne.

By bus[edit]

Public bus number 52 [2] connects Bryne and Kleppe to Sandnes hourly (half-hourly from Kleppe parts of the day). Making further Connections to Stavanger or other destinations in Rogaland from Sandnes is a piece of cake. Bus X44 [3] has a couple of departures between Kleppe and Stavanger in the morning and afternoon.

Get around[edit]

Due to long distances and low population density, private car is the primary mode of transport at Jæren. You will most likely need to go to Stavanger or Sandnes to obtain a rental car. Roads are often narrow, and you may easily find a tractor or other slow moving vehicle in front of you. On the other hand, traffic is usually light and the driving pattern uncomplicated.

There are some local bus services connecting the towns and villages. These are primarily numbered 50-62. Most only depart a few times a day though.
