The Baikal Highway (Байкальский тракт), a route from Irkutsk to Listvyanka village usually taken by marshrutka. One-hour trip starts from Irkutsk reservoir and is 68km long. The road is in some distance from the Reservoir that can be seen by rare glimpses as the road goes up and down along the hills covered with pines, burches and bush.
The Circum-Baikal Railway (Кругобайкальская железная дорога), a memorial railway in Pribaikalsy National Park. It was a part of Trans-Siberian Railway in active exploitation till 1950s. When the main bypass was constructed the Railway lost its importance and is used now for tourist and emergency purposes. A few carriages depart from Slyudyanka, the southmost station and 4h 40min later arrive in Baikal station, wich is also a port up north. Enjoy panoramic views full of beautiful nature as the train moves along the shoreline. There are four stops and 38 tunnels during the trip. Retro trains (№988/987 Байкальский круиз) shuttle on special dates.
Rafting on Irkut river. It's a trip to real Taiga river. The best time for rafting is July and August. Usually, 2 or 3-day tours available. Trip starting from Irkutsk - Anchuk bus transfer. It's 120 km road. In this way you can stop at the most south point of Lake Baikal at Kultuk village, make photos with lake and eat hot smocked kharius, just cooking by locals. Next stop is Irkut river not far from Anchuk village. In this place you seating on rafts and paddling through white water. Grades of white water from 1 to 3. There is a one 3 grade place - Bolshoy porog (Big drop). Another drops are 1 or 2 grade. River flows through mountains, covered by wild forest. There are no much people here. You can meet only few fishermеn in all you trip. You can use flyfishing or spinning to catch kharius. Sometimes best bites are real grasshopper or gadfly from banks of the river. In the evening you may be attacked by small bloodsucking flying insects - use reppelents for solve this problem. Also you must use antiixodes reppelent (sold in any local supermarket in the summer) against tick-borne encephalitis, wich sometimes occurs in this region. There are no 5-hotels on this river - only campings, because this is a Barguzin national park. Nights are cold, so you must have dry warm clothes. The trip finishing near Shamanka village, near high red rock. Then transfer back to Irkutsk. More informatoin you can find in Google using @rafting Irkut@ words.
