Jump to: navigation, search

Igarka (Russian: Ига́рка ee-GAHR-kuh) is a city in the extreme north of the Krasnoyarsk Region. Its airport serves travelers heading to remote destinations in Taymyria and Evenkia. Igarka gained a certain infamy as the beginning of the 503rd Labor Camp's attempt, on Stalin's orders, to build a railway along the Arctic Circle to Salekhard in Yamalia. The project failed and thousands of the gulag laborers died in the process.

Igarka Airport is served by flights from Moscow and Krasnoyarsk. As the airport is on an island, you will require either an ice-bridge into town or a ferry ride.

In the summer it may be possible to arrive by cruise ship from Krasnoyarsk along the Yenisey River.
