Scenic Hill and Hermits Caves
Once home for Valerio Ricetti, visit the rocky outcrop caves located just minutes from the Griffith CBD where for nearly a decade Valerio made his home and became know as the Hermit of Scenic Hill. A series of rock outcrop caves, walk ways and gardens where built by Ricetti during his time at the hill. Located immediately below Sir Dudley de Chair's Lookout are the Hermit's Caves. These caves are a lasting reminder of Valerio Ricetti who between the two Wars made his home on the then isolated hillside. As well as creating a variety of living areas and a chapel, Valerio built a series of terraces and other areas to grow his crops. Before proceeding to the caves obtain a copy of the Hermit's story from the Visitor Information Centre. It will help to bring the story of Valerio Ricetti to life.
The Hill is a nature area and native plant regeneration is being encouraged. Located along the rim of Scenic Hill are a number of lookouts each offering a different view of Griffith and the surrounding farmland. As well as the lookouts a number of marked walking trails criss cross the Hill with most of the trails being easy to moderate. A brochure on the walking trails is available from the Visitor Information Centre.
Wongabong Lookout-access is via a fire trail. The views are out over that part of Griffith Burley Griffin envisaged to become the heart of the city.
Rotary Lookout-an elevated platform giving views over the CBD and south beyond the village of Hanwood.
Sir Dudley de Chair's Lookout - Sir Dudley de Chair was an early Governor of NSW and the rock that forms his lookout gives perhaps the best views afforded from Scenic Hill.
