Gijon [1] (Spanish: Gijón) is a coastal city in Asturias province in northwest Spain. It lies close to the cities of Aviles and Oviedo.

The weather in Gijón is not like much of the rest of Spain. Gijón is on the northern coast of Spain were is is wet and very hot in summer.

Understand

Location

The Town Council of Gijón, with a surface of 187, 7 km2, is located at the centre of the Asturias coast, surrounded by the Town Councils of Carreño, Corvera, Llanera, Siero, Sariego and Villaviciosa. The urban area in Gijón has a surface of approximately 13, 9 km2 (the 7,6% of the total surface in the Council) and it has the 90% of the population, which is of 278,000 inhabitants more or less. The other 10% is divided into the 25 churches in the Council.

Climate

Gijón shares the general climate characteristics of the Cantabrian Coast, with the slight nuances of it coastal situation, and it can be said to have a warm temperature, with an average annual temperature of 15º and a small oscillation between the average maximum and minimum. The rainfall doesn’t have big oscillations either, it depends on the season, and the average is around 800 – 1000 mm/year. However, both the temperature and the rainfall can slightly change in the southeast edge of the Council, where we can see the biggest heights with a drop in the temperatures and a rise in the rainfalls.

History

The Bay of Biscay has left a trace in the history of Gijón for more than 5000 years. The city still has its Roman past alive through the interventions made in the Archaeological Park in Campa Torres, one of the main forts in the north of Spain (previous to the one in 490 b.c.), and, above all, in the recovered thermal resort in Campo Valdés, public building from the end of the 1st century a.c. In the Middle Age, the territory is taken up by the Roman Churches in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Puebla Foundation in 1270 implies an urban expansion that will be stopped at the end of the 14th century, when Gijón becomes the stage of the Trastámara conflicts and almost all the city is destroyed. In the 18th century, the erudite Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos draws the axis of the development of the city. The industrialization process, from the middle of the 19th century, turned the city into the industrial centre of Asturias with the powerful Musel Harbour and a lot of shipyards. The progressive modernization of the population and its excellent natural conditions made of Gijón a city with a powerful service sector and a good cultural and sports offer that attracts a growing number of visitors.

Culture

Gijón is interested in spreading its culture. Good proof of that are the different cultural initiatives of the city: associations, theatres, museums, exhibition spaces, cultural centres, monuments…

Get in

By car

As it is in the centre of the Coast, Gijón is the meeting point of two big road axis: Ruta de la Plata and the Cantabrian Axis. Gijón is connected by the National Road N-630 “Ruta de la Plata”, which goes from Gijón to Sevilla, but there are also two other important motorways (A-66 and AP-66, from Benavente to León and from León to Campomanes) which allow an easy trip from the south of the country: Madrid and other cities belonging to the Ruta de la Plata. This motorway A-66 is is being developed all throughout the route between Gijón and Sevilla (800km.) and nowadays more than a third of its total route is working, the rest is under construction. The second axis east-west, which passes through all the Cantabrian coast is connected by the National Road N-634, which goes from Irún to Santiago de Compostela, that is spread into the Coastal Road N-632, which goes from Ribadesella to Canero, which allows you to go near the sea or to go deep into the inside.
