François (generally pronounced "Franceway") is a small coastal village in Southern Newfoundland, accessible by ferry.
The François community web page has more information of interest to visitors.
Access to Francois is only by passenger ferry coming from the east or the west, on a limited schedule. While it probably changes occassionally, as of summer 2007 there was a ferry leaving from Hermitage on Fridays. The ferry costs round $5. It also may be possible to solicit a ride from a local fisherman headed that way.
There are no roads in François.
There is a nice, fairly short hike up to a look out point just above the town, a good portion of which is boardwalked.
Visits to the local museum can be arranged on request, and there is a library and Community Access Program (CAP) site for internet access.
There is a general store from which you can buy food and other amenities.
Near the church in François, there is a simple camping site with picnic bench and outhouse.
Several residents also offer their homes for visitors to spend a few nights in. More information can be found here. Nightly rates are available upon request and are very reasonable.
