Fogo is an island of Cape Verde.
Fogo errupted out of the Atlantic 100000 years ago and has been an active volcano ever since. The most recent erruption was in 1995 which had the inhabitants of Chã das Caldeiras - the crater region at the top of the island - evacuate their homes for 6 months.

To climb up the Pico do Fogo you are obliged to take a local guide because of safety reasons. He shows you what's to know. You need about 3 to 5 hours to go up, starting in the early morning before sunrise. You will see the shadow of the volcano on the bordeira. Most people are able to mount, because it's a long way but not to hard.
The charming main town of São Filipe with it's sobrado architecture is worth exploring for a day or so on your way through.
Regular flights to Fogo from Praia and Sal landing in São Filipe. Ask for a seat on the right side of the plane for the best view of the volcano.
Be careful: the boots don't go, if the sea is turbulent and the flights are often changed in time.
Local speciality made of beans and corn accompanied by fish or chicken is called Cachupa. Ask your local guide, he will organize an authentic meal.
Meat is in general not recommended, because mostly tough. Prefaire fresh fish or chicken, bouth in excellent quality.
Fogo is even safe, if you take normal care. Don't take daypacks or other bags to the beaches or other lonely places, if you are not accompanied by a local guide.
