Fiumicino was originally a fishing village and is still an important fishing centre; it is located on the west coast of Italy, in the province of Rome. The Leonardo da Vinci International Airport is close by and is usually referred to as Fiumicino airport (its international code being FCO). The town is home to approximately 7000 inhabitants.
This region enjoys a Mediterranean climate similar to that of Rome, with occasional sea breezes that keep it cooler during the summer. Spring and autumn are the best time to visit, as the weather is most pleasant at this time. At the peak of summer, the temperature regularly goes over 35°C. Winters are mild.
Lately, the city has also become a popular retreat for Romans; it is also a popular place for visitors to stay while visiting Rome. If you are flying out from Fiumicino airport, it could be a pleasant place to stay for your last night, avoiding the hassle of Rome's traffic on the way to catch your flight.
Downtown Fiumicino is a short drive away from the airport. Roman taxis will probably refuse to take you there - they will probably have been queueing for hours expecting the set € 48 fare to Rome's centre and might not prefer to take you to Fiumicino for a lower fare. However, know that there are special taxis that only go between the airport and the town of Fiumicino; they're stationed across the street from the airport exit, under the entrance to the train station. There's a set fare (€ 20), but there may be an extra charge for luggage or if there's more than one passenger. The drivers are generally very friendly and will show you the fare in advance. Also, if you wish to go to Rome from Fiumicino (or vice versa), you can take a taxi to the airport and then the train (€ 11 per person) or a taxi to Rome (the set fare is € 48 - it is painted on the car doors of every legitimate Roman taxi). If you choose to go directly from Rome to Fiumicino (or vice versa) by taxi, you will travel on the metre; traffic can drive the fare up quickly and, if there's heavy traffic, it may exceed € 100.
Battelli di Roma: a great way to go from Rome to Ostia and at a very reasonable rate. The boat picks up/drops off at Ostia antica, a most interesting archaeological site located at Fiumicino's neighboring... neighbourhood (as it's part of Rome).
The Roma-Lido railway has a station ("Ostia Antica") that provides easy access to Fiumicino from Rome.
With regards to Ostia, Fiumicino is located on the opposite bank of the Tiber (therefore, it cannot be accessed from there) and seems not to have any train station despite appearing on the railway network map.
Rome: the city is just a short train ride away from the "Ostia Antica" stop; the homonymous site, in turn, is only a fifteen-minute car ride from Fiumicino.
Ostia Antica: the ancient Roman city of Ostia was, in Ancient times, located at the mouth of the Tiber river, some 30 kilometres to the west of Rome. The shoreline moved seawards (due to silting) from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. Therefore, today Ostia is still lying next to the Tiber but is some three kilometres from the beach. The name "Ostia" comes from the Latin word for "mouth" - that is, the mouth of the Tiber. The river was used as an harbour and during the Imperial period two harbour basins were added further north, near the airport; the harbour district was called "Portus", Latin for "harbour". Ostia antica is home to an archaeological site on par with the one at Pompeii.
