Fenghuangshan National Park (凤凰山国家公园) is in Liaoning province.

Understand[edit]

Also called Phoenix Mountain, site is covered with temples, pagodas and monasteries. There is also a cave system that can be explored.

History[edit]

Landscape[edit]

Flora and fauna[edit]

Climate[edit]

Get in[edit]

Long Distance Bus Terminal (across from train station. Leave every 10 minutes 15.5RMB (Oct.2012) drop off at parking lot.

Taxis 160-200RMB/car.

  • Buses to the town of Fengcheng, just outside the park, from Dandong every few minutes throughout the day

Fees/Permits[edit]

¥80 for entrance into the park, 元10 for entrance into Phoenix Cave (October 2012)

Get around[edit]

Buses run from the bottom gate to the second gate. 10RMB down assume same up. More buses run from second gate to main base complex. At night, buses run from main base down to the main gate.

Gondola to the top/bottom of the mountain 50RMB 1 way.

Prices as of October 2012.

Walking on the mountain is one-way on very narrow, steep routes with stairs carved into the rock and handrails. If it is busy (Mid-autumn Festival), expect the pace to be about 10 steps/minute painfully slow and can be claustrophobic with no way to turn around. Be sure to bring a jacket as you may be up there longer than you think. The views are beautiful and if you're prepared to have a leisurely stroll, you'll enjoy it more.

See[edit][add listing]

  • Phoenix Cave - colored light display on stalagtites

Do[edit][add listing]

  • visit Mountain Temple Fair in April

Buy[edit][add listing]

Typical Chinese tourist trinkets. Might find some interesting old comics, red book, walnuts for healthy hand spinning.

Eat[edit][add listing]

Main-gate food vendors selling energy rich hiking snacks.

Peanut/sesame brittle.

Bee máshu (麻糬) otherwise known as mochi made with bees watching. Not sure why the bees are there but looks great.

Water and other refreshments at way-points on the mountain sell at a premium. Bring a few extra RMB and save the weight.

Drink[edit][add listing]

Sleep[edit][add listing]

Lodging[edit]

Camping[edit]

Backcountry[edit]

Stay safe[edit]

Get out[edit]

Buses back to Dandong (LD bus terminal across from train station) end early (around 6pm?). 16RMB to head back on these buses. Look for them across the street from the parking lot. Probably yelling "Dandong, Dandong, Dandonguehhhhhh!"

If back down the mountain a little late, look for taxis. 40-50RMB/person depending on the driver. 160-200RMB/car.
