Founded in December 1800 Clermont County [1] is the seventh oldest county of Ohio's 88 counties. It's name means "clear mountain" despite there being no mountains within the county. The county is a mix of urban sprawl and rural farmlands.

• East Fork State Park, 25 miles east of Cincinnati and south of SR 32, off of Route 133. 384 electric campsites, 5 full-hookup sites, showers, flush toilets, drinking water, camper's beach, boat ramp, pet camping, 4 spacious Cedar Cabins, 4 camper cabins, horsemen's camp. Backpacker trail, 10 miles of scenic areas, 20-mile round trip. 32-mile perimeter trail circles the park, for hikers, backpackers, and horsemen. Four primitive campsites are these trails. 5-mile mountain bike trail. 2,160 acres of water, unlimited horsepower boating, six launch ramps. Hunting, fishing, picnic areas, tables, grills, drinking water, two picnic shelters, swimming, 1,200-foot beach, change booths, restrooms, vending area, mini-golf course, bike rental, basketball, horseshoe courts, and playgrounds.

Understand

Clermont County was home to Miami, Delaware, Mingo, Ottawa and Cherokee tribes and as European and American settlers came to the Nortwest Territory the county became home to a large immigrant population, most notably German immigrants.

The county played an important role in the Underground Railroad due to its location in Southwest Ohio on the border with Kentucky. The county had several "stations" and was home to numerous high profile abolitionists including. Charles "Boss" B. Huber helped hide an estimated 300 - 500 fugitive slaves. Huber’s neighbor, Dr. L.T. Pease took over the role Williamsburg's stationmaster upon Huber's death.

Clermont County's most famous son is Ulysses S. Grant, born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, a small village along the Ohio River. Grant became one of America's most important military leaders during The American Civil War. His wartime success led him to become the next American President after Andrew Johnson succeeded to the presidency after Lincoln's assassination.

Interstate 275 provides the quickest access to Clermont County from Northern Kentucky and Hamilton County.

U.S. Route 50 connects Annapolis, Maryland to Sacramento, California via Clermont County. U.S. Route 52 follows Clermont County's southern border along the Ohio River. U.S. 52 connects Charleston, South Carolina with Portal, North Dakota.

State Routes 32, 125, and 131 also connect many Ohios towns and cities. State Route 32 connects West Virginia with Cincinnati and runs throught the mid-section of Clermont County.

Batavia

There are few restaurants within Batavia. The best option for travelers would be to follow U.S. Route 50 to Milford or Miami Township where there are plenty of restaurants.

Chilo

Chilo Dairy Bar - U.S. 52 near Chilo Locks County Park Offers soft serve ice milk and assorted short-order fare, including breakfast, pizza, burgers, tenderloins, etc. Limited Fall/Winter hours, usually meaning closed Mon-Tues. and open for day-trippers on US 52 towards the latter part of the week. A nice place to stop for a snack to enjoy in the park while watching the Ohio River.

Owensville

Owensville is a very quiet community and only has a few restaurants (primarily pizza places and a drive-in), however, small roadside stands that sell fresh vegetables and fruits may be occasionally found along the roads. One well-known roadside stand is Hill's Roadside Market, which has been offering less in the past few years, but is still well-known as being one of the only places to buy farm fresh vegetables and fruits. The best option for travelers would be to follow State Route 131 or State Route 50 to Milford or Miami Township where there are plenty of restaurants.

Drink

Within Clermont County the most active nightlife scenes are in Milford or Union Township/Eastgate. Two particularly well-known bars are Rhino's in Eastgate and Sneaky Pete's in Milford.

Stay safe

The biggest danger in the rural areas include the possible meth labs, which are continously discovered in the rural back roads of Southwest Ohio. Milford-Miami Township is the most versified and liberal area of Clermont County. Additionally, Milford-Miami Township is among the safest places in the tri-state area.
