Look around the ticket counters to find the various companies although they don't always have buses running at the advertised times.  Buses leave between 8.30 and 3.30, but more buses run in the morning.  Prices range from RM20-RM35.  The cheaper Kurnia Bistari bus tickets can be bought at ticket counter 86/87. Many locals and other seasoned travelers however strongly advise against taking the Kurnia  Bistari bus service as it is the least reliable and most uncomfortable.

A tea plantation at the Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands is situated in Pahang, West Malaysia. It is approximately 85 kilometres from Ipoh or about 200 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur.

The “Camerons” is one of Malaysia’s most extensive hill stations. It covers an area of 712 square kilometres which is about the size of Singapore.

To the north, its boundary touches that of Kelantan; to the west, it shares part of its border with Perak.

The resort is made up of eight neighbourhoods. The three townships are Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang. The five settlements are the Bertam Valley, Kea Farm, Tringkap, Kuala Terla and Kampung Raja. All are separated from one another by a considerable distance.

At 5,000 ft (1,500 m) above sea level, the constituency is the highest point in Malaysia which is accessible by car.

During the day, the temperature seldom soars above 25°C; at night, it can drop to as low as 12°C.

The retreat has a diverse population of more than 43,000 people comprising Malays, Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups. The literacy rate here is about 88 percent. Internet facilities are readily available.

The entry point to the highlands is via Tapah or Simpang Pulai. The two interchanges are located in the state of Perak.

Get in

By bus

The nearest major town is Ipoh.

From Ipoh, you can catch the Kinta Omnibus buses to Tanah Rata from Medan Kidd bus terminal (5 mins walk from the train station). The cost is RM10.30 and there are 4 services per day (8am, 11am, 3pm, 5pm). The air-conditioned buses are quite old, but the timings are quite realiable. The buses travel via Simpang Pulai and do stop at the towns, such as Kampong Raja and Brinchang, along the way. Just let the driver know before hand, or press the bell when nearing the town.

From Kuala Lumpur, buses to Tanah Rata can be caught at Puduraya Central Bus Station and take about 4 1/2 hours. Due to renovations however, the station is currently closed and will not be reopening until early next year. The car park at Bukit Jalil is serving as a temporary replacement. To get to Bukit Jalil from KL there is a RM2 shuttle bus.

Look around the ticket counters to find the various companies although they don't always have buses running at the advertised times. Buses leave between 8.30 and 3.30, but more buses run in the morning. Prices range from RM20 - RM35. The cheaper Kurnia Bistari bus tickets can be bought at ticket counter 86/87. Many locals and other seasoned travelers however strongly advise against taking the Kurnia Bistari bus service as it is the least reliable and most uncomfortable.

From Singapore, overnight VIP buses run from the Golden Mile tower/complex. Coach companies such as Grassland and Fivestar charge between $55 and $65 (Singapore dollars) depending on the day and time of travel. Travelling time to Cameron Highlands is around 10 hours stopping at Ringlet, Lakehouse, Brinchang Hotel, Equatorial Hotel, Heritage Hotel and Tanah Rata.

By car

From North-South Expressway, exit the expressway at Tapah and then proceed via route 59 straight along the way to the highlands. You are estimated to reach the south end's first town of Ringlet in 1 hour 30 minutes.

Alternatively, you can exit the expressway at Simpang Pulai, Ipoh and proceed via a new route 145 to Cameron Highlands along the way to the top.You can expect to reach the first town of the northern end, Kampung Raja, in an hour.

By shuttle mini van

You can also use mini van transfer to get to Cameron Highlands:

From Kuala Lumpur-pick up at Swiss Inn Jalan Sultan Chinatown. 12pm Daily RM35 Duration: 4 1/2 Hours

From Penang-pick up at Georgetown 11:30am Daily RM38 Duration: 4 1/2 Hours

From Taman Negara-pick up at Kuala Tembeling Jetty. RM85 Duration: 5 1/2 Hours

For Reservation: +605-491 5828

By taxi

A taxi station is located at about 100 metres east of the bus station along Jalan Besar road. Taxi fares are subject to negotiation as most of the taxi drivers are notorious for not using the meters. Be prepared to negotiate hard.

Get around

The popular towns of the retreat are Tanah Rata and Brinchang. They are about four kilometres apart.

Walking

One of the best ways to see the area is to walk. Do bring along an umbrella just in case it rains.

By bus

The bus station is at Tanah Rata. Buses run hourly to most of the tourist spots. The fare is about RM1.50.

By car

The resort has a good network of roads. If you are planning to get off the beaten track, renting a car may be a good option.

By motorcycle

Motorcycles can be rented at some of the guest houses. You must have a license to ride a motorcycle.

By taxi

The taxi fare between Tanah Rata and Brinchang is RM6. You can hire a taxi for two hours for RM50. This rate is approved by the government.

By van charter

You can plan an itinerary of your own by hiring a 10-seater van. Do enquire of the charges before making any decisions.

File:Time tunnel 01.jpg
The TIME TUNNEL is a "must visit" place if you want to get to know more about the Cameron Highlands.
  • Bala's Holiday Chalet, (off the main road between the two main towns.), 05-491 1660, [1]. One of the oldest colonial buildings in the Cameron Highlands. The main building was once the school for English expatriates' children and has had a vibrant history throughout the imperialist conflicts that have taken place in the region.
  • Gunung (Mount) Brinchang. At 6,666 feet above sea level, this is the highest point in Malaysia which is accessible by car. At the top of the mountain is a radio and television station. Close to the installation is a 15-metre-high “Observation Tower”. This is the best place to get a good view of the Cameron Highlands and the neighbouring state of Perak. The taxi fare to the summit and back can amount to as much as RM100. Before heading this way, it would be wise to negotiate with the taxi driver to see if the trip could include a visit to the nearby Mossy Forest and the Boh Tea plantation which is located at Sungei Palas.
  • Mossy Forest. There is a boardwalk at the top of Gunung (Mount) Brinchang which takes you through the Mossy Forest. This reserve is unlike any other in peninsular Malaysia: its base is covered with a thick carpet of moss. Most of the trees here have remained untouched for centuries. Be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time exploring this place.
  • Parit Waterfall. There are two ways to get to the waterfall: you could either start from the Forestry Department or take Track 4 which is at the side of the Century Pines Resort. If you opt for the former, you should reach the falls in less than an hour. For the latter, the journey is about 15 minutes.
  • Rafflesia Flower, [2]. The largest flower in the world (actually an external parasitic plant, lacking leaves, stem or roots).
  • Robinson Rose Garden, Rose Centre & Rose Valley. All three estates are worth a visit. Here you can see how roses are grown.
  • Robinson Waterfall, [3]. The falls are a short distance from Tanah Rata. It could be reach via Path 9. (N04 27.88',E101 23.20')
  • TIME TUNNEL – The Local Museum, (located within the Kok Lim Strawberry Farm), 016-3288 438 / 013-5247 120. The TIME TUNNEL is Malaysia’s first memorabilia “museum”. It is recognised as one of the main attractions of the Cameron Highlands. The galleria is filled with objets de art that showcase what life was like in Malaysia after the Japanese Occupation. Apart from collectibles and memorabilia, there is also an assortment of old photographs on display here – most dating back to the post-War years. The “museum” is open daily from 9am to 6pm. There are no restrictions to photography at the gallery. The entrance fee is RM5 for adults and RM3 for children. There are ample parking lots available at the complex.

The mysterious disappearance of Jim Thompson
Jim Thompson was born on March 21, 1906 in Greenville, Delaware, USA. During the Second World War, he served as an officer with the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor of the Central Intelligence Agency. After the war, he came to Thailand to join the US embassy in Bangkok.

In 1947, he left the army to work on the restoration of the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok. Later, he teamed up with a number of investors to form the Thai Silk Company.

Thompson was unlike any other figure in Southeast Asia. He was an American, an ex-architect, a silk merchant and a renowned collector of antiques. Most of his treasures, if not all, were amassed since the day he first came to Thailand.

In 1958, he embarked on the construction of a new home to showcase his art collection. Using parts of old up-country houses – some as old as a hundred years – he succeeded in completing his ‘House on the Klong’ in 1959. Till today, it still stands out as one of Bangkok’s most charming attractions.

In 1967, he took leave of Thailand to spend a holiday in Malaysia. He came to the Cameron Highlands with Mrs. Constance (Connie) Mangskau on Friday, March 24. They stayed at “Moonlight” bungalow with Dr. Ling Tien Gi, a Singaporean-Chinese chemist and Mrs. Helen Ling, his white American-born wife. On Easter Sunday, March 26, he went for a walk but failed to return.

  • Hiking. You will find simple maps at tour operators and hotels, or online [4].
  • Trek to Gunung Brinchang. A peak at 2000m, which can be reached by walking 'Trail 1' from Brinchang. Finding the path can be a bit confusing as the sign is located about 10m from the main road. Ask for directions to the army base and follow the road to the end. From there you will find clear signs for the path. The walk to the top takes about 2-2,5 hours. It is an easy path to follow and it is perfectly possible to do this trek without a guide. The trek is not very steep but you need to be in decent shape. After reaching the top, follow the road for another 6km down to reach the main road, where you will find the 'boh' tea plantation. From there you can take the hourly bus back to Brinchang.
  • Golf, (between Tanah Rata and Brinchang), 05-491 1126. The 18-hole Cameron Highlands Golf Course is a beautiful although quite challenging course with tricky greens and terrain. Like most of Malaysia however, it could do with some of the garbage in certain areas such as the steams being tidied up. If you require them, a pretty decent range of golf clubs are available to hire for RM70 at the club house.
  • Boh Tea Centre, & Sg Palas Plantation, (Follow the main road from Brinchang towards Kg Raja. After the Equatorial Hotel, look out for signs that say Boh Sg Palas Estate and turn left into the narrow hill road. The junction faces a row of stalls selling fruits and vegetables from the Kea Farm and can be easily missed.). Operated by Malaysia's largest tea company. Tours available of tea factory (free). Also includes an interactive educational studio, a retail outlet, and a nice cafe. Also offers some stunning vistas of rolling hills amidst a carefully tendered tea plantation. The drive up the hill can be very narrow at stages, so caution should be shown when driving up. The view from the top of nearby hill at the plantation is well worth the effort of climbing up.
  • Overnight Camping at Gunung Irau, Kang Tours & Travel (Tanah Rata), +605-491 5828, [5]. Overnight. Camping overnight at Gunung Irau which is one of the highest peak next to Gunung Brinchang. All camping gear will be provided with a guided Tour by Eco-Tour Guide specialist Mr. Bala RM350.
  • Country Side Tour by Kang Tours & Travel, No.38, Jalan Besar, 39000 Tanah Rata., +605-4915828, [6]. 5-6.
