Adilabad is a town City north west of Hyderabad. It was once part of Maharashtra but borders have changed since 1945 to make it a town of Andra Pradesh.
Among the districts of Andhra Pradesh, Adilabad ranks first in earning revenue from minerals. It is well endowd with rich reserves of coal , iron ore, lime stone and clays.
This is one of the few district head quarters in the state which is connected with National higway, Broad Gauge train route. Good train connectivity is available to mancheral and Kagaz nagar from state capitol Hyderabad. Visit http://www.indianrail.gov.in for train schedules and reservations.
Though a small airport is available, it is not in regular use.
Due to the heavy amount of transactions involved in cotton business, this city is also called of "City of Cotton".

This District has been the place of stay for some of the tribe sects like Gond, Lambada, etc whose mother tongue do not have script. There is a Fort in the town of Utnoor which is 55 km from Adilabad which was built by Gond kings who ruled this area. Currently Utnoor is the operational headquarter for the organization ITDA (ITDA-> Integrated Tribal Development Authority) set up by government of AP for the benifit of tribals.
NIRMAL:- < Nirmal which is 74 km down south of Adilabad on the NH7 is well known for its wooden toys and paintings. There is a fort in this town too. Nirmal is one of the political capital city for Adilabad district.
Nirmal , the little town that occupies a proud place on the handicrafts map of India lies in the district of forests, Adilabad. 210 km from Hyderabad , the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, Nirmal is embedded amidst the Sahaydri mountain range offering a pleasant ambience surrounded by hills and forests thus creating a vulnerable climate throughout the year.
Folklores say that Nirmal was renamed after a village headman and a chieftain Neema Naik who manufactured weapons of war. He also encouraged craftsmanship of his workers thereby helping the growth and promotion of art of the wood engraving.
Nirmal, always enjoyed the patronage of the ruling nobility.The Nizams of Hyderabad were very much inclined towards the ecstatic wooden engravings and craftsmanship.>
Adilabad is separated from its neighbouring districts by river Godavari. There is a Goddess Saraswati temple on the banks of river Godavari in the temple town of Basar. This is the only Saraswati temple in the entire South India.
Mancherial the other town in this district, is well developed commercially and industrially, due to the Delhi - South India train connectivity.
