Screwed up Ko Lanta

I mistakenly deleted a large portion of Ko Lanta (everything after "Diving") and now I am having difficulty figuring out how to fix the problem. Can someone help me put the page back as it was on 2012-12-26? -- 21:21, 28 December 2012 (EST)

Looks like you figured it out? Let me know if not!--IBobi talk email 15:43, 3 January 2013 (EST)

Armenia has introduced visa waiver for EU & EEA countries, please update the visa section of this article . Full list of countries whose citizens do not need to obtain entry visas for Armenia are available on Wikipedia here

Thank you!

Please fix typo on the main page

The heading "Antartica" should be "Antarctica". I would fix it but apparently don't have permission to edit. Markoboston 19:05, 1 January 2013 (EST)

Bothered me too -- I just saw your note here but fixed it independently. I won a 5th grade spelling bee getting that extra C in there ;)

Safety for first year students at UCT

We are concerned for our first year going to university of cape town and his physical safety

This is not really a message board type of website; I would suggest perhaps posting your concern on the Discussion page of the Cape Town article and see if anyone responds; alternately, you can view the history of revisions and see if there are any regular local contributors who you could leave a message for on their Talk Pages.--IBobi talk email 14:37, 7 January 2013 (EST)

en:Chiang Dao

I am not impressed. Somebody keeps editing out things, in the Chiang Dao, Thailand page. For example, there are at least 30 resorts and guesthouses in Chiang Dao, most of them a lot better than Nature Home or Chiang Dao Hut. I believe, somebody is maliciously changing previous edits.

I had a look at that and indeed, some of the resorts were deleted. In this case, feel free to contact the user who made the changes by writing on her user Page [1] and asking what was the intention of this edit. I am going to do this right now. If you would like to post more listings on en: Chiang Dao page, please en:Plunge forward. Please keep in mind also our policies.
It is also a good idea to create your own account on Wikitravel because it will give you various benefits:
  1. Ability to communicate with other writers about your edits and travel tips
  2. Ability to turn off advertising in your Account Settings
  3. Credit for your travel writing/edits, which will be attributed to you rather than just an IP address
  4. Your contributions will be more trusted as you become familiar to other Wikitravelers

Last but not least, please remember to sign your posts by writing ~~~~ .I am looking forward to seeing you on Wikitravel! IBAlex 19:32, 8 January 2013 (EST)

Here is the explanation why the previous edits on Chiang Dao page were changed [2]. I hope this helps, IBAlex 19:32, 8 January 2013 (EST)
Hi! I'm the guy who recently consolidated some listing for Chiang Dao. I live down the road from Chiang Dao so I have never been there. Having not been there, I am not qualified to judge local businesses, thus cannot add worthy candidates. I too fear that we are missing some really good ones. If you live in the are, please help me to upgrade our listings. BTW, I never remove an entry unless it is blatent advertising or some other gaming of the system. And when I do remove one, I give an explanation of why. -- 20:00, 8 January 2013 (EST)

Hi Hoppy! I am here, ready to help you! Best way to learn quickly how to navigate on WT is to read our Quick Contribution Guide. You upload pictures to Wikitravel through Wikitravel Shared which is our hub for all the files (pictures, maps) for all language versions of the site. You have to create an account on WT Shared to be able to upload the picture. Here is how to do it [6]. Once you create an account on WT Shared use this page to upload a file. Then you can go to whichever article you want on Wikitravel and put the picture over there. Let me know if everything is clear now.
I am looking forward to seeing a picture from you in Wikitarvel. Warm regards, IBAlex 13:36, 22 January 2013 (EST)
Sadly the link to WikiShared above keeps coming up with 'bad title'. I think there is a problem today with Wikishared. Is there any other way of uploading a photo?¬¬¬¬ Hoppy 0900 EST 23rd Jan 2013
Let's try again [7]. For me everything works. We do upload pictures only through Wikitravel Shared. Keep me posted if you have any problems, thank you! Warm regards, IBAlex 13:38, 23 January 2013 (EST)

Defective Search Engine

Your Search Engine is Non-Intuitive & Defective. Pemberton (British Columbia)is the only syntax acepted everything else is not found, if you put a space before the "B" & after the "a" it doesn't work either:

Pls somebody add these alternates: Pemberton British Columbia, Pemberton BC, Pemberton British Columbia, Pemberton BC Canada or CA or CND, same uncapitalized in small fonts pemberton british columbia, pemberton bc, pemberton british columbia, pemberton bc canada or ca or cnd etc. I added seveveral #REDIRECT pages a single page with 1 line of

Pemberton Canada#REDIRECT Pemberton (British Columbia)

but this crude & clumsey & makes users click another un-nessary time. Added by PemGateway

Dear PemGateway! Thank you for your message. Let me explain the situation. Every time you put the key words into search engine and press Go, the search engine executes a "page exact match" query. However, if you are executing a search - you need to click the Search button explicitly to bring up possible matches for the keyword. Try it with different examples like Cambridge (Massachusetts), Cambridge( Massachusetts ), Cambridge Massachusetts and you will see that the search engine gives you different options and works fine.
I have also created several redirects to en: Pemberton (British Columbia) page so that users are directly taken to the page however if they Search in the search engine for the name of the place, they should not have any difficulties in finding it.
Also, the proper wiki markup for redirecting pages is #REDIRECT [[Pemberton (British Columbia ]]. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Warm regards, IBAlex 21:06, 28 January 2013 (EST)
Thanks PemGateway

Bergama - sleep listing

I tried to add a new campsite listing on the Bergama page.

There was no "add listing" next to the camping section so it has loaded at the top of the "Sleep" section instead of under the Camping section. Can you fix?

Cybersuezee 16:35, 28 January 2013 (EST)

Hi Cybersuezee! Of course I can help! Please check Bergama page to see if everything is ok. I also sent you a welcome message on your Talk Page [8] with links to many helpful pages that explain how to edit a page/ create a page/ add a listing on Wikitravel. Please read our Quick Contribution Guide[9] that is also very helpful for new contributors. Warm regards, IBAlex 16:47, 28 January 2013 (EST)

Thank you - that is fixed. But now I tried to to add the website link to the name of the business and that hasn't worked ( What did I do wrong? And I will go the the Talk page and read about how to do it right first time. Sue

You are welcome! Your listing had already a link to page. Right next to the information about the phone number. And that's how the right listing format should look like. I recommend you reading the following pages: [10], [11]. I'm sure they will help you. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, IBAlex 16:58, 28 January 2013 (EST)

Salta main tourist agencies

I have to complain about the wiki page about Salta where is written that the tourist firm Pasada touristically is one of the main firms in Salta. I chose this company because I read about it in Wikitravel. I have a negative experience connected with this company and actually not only 8. As I have found out from the Internet even in 2008 a group of tourists had problems with this company and even in 2008there was many complains on it. We bought a tour to Cachi with this company but after a 2 hour trip they told us that the road was bad and they have to return to salta. But they actually knew before that the road was bad and just dia not want to loose money. They offered us 2 variants to take a city tour for the same price ( city tour costs 120, Cachi costs 230 pesos ) or take the same tour the next day. We couldn't as we have bus tickets to Cordoba the next day. We asked to return our money backand actually still receive nothing. Local mines terry of tourism doesn't help us and it seems as if they didn't even try. I actually writing because I hope that this will help some other tourists to get in such a situation. You can check about the reputation of this firm with the local authorities. Here's my e-mail if you wish to contact with me. Sincerely yours, Svetlana Frolova

Dear Svetlana, sorry to hear about your bad experience with the company. Please know that our aim is to keep the tonality and edits as neutral as possible here however the content on Wikitravel is generated by users and their experiences with particular places which cannot be fully objective. To help other Travellers and to make Wikitravel better, please plunge forward and put your edits on the page you mentioned. In this way, Wikitravel will be more up-to-date and reliable as a travel guide. This site[12] will help you start contributing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. Warm regards, IBAlex 14:31, 4 February 2013 (EST)

What does ransom mean? Why won't it accept my writing?

Hi! Thanks for the message. Wikitravel has several abuse filters that protect the site form potential spammers or vandals who come to the site and make lots of malicious changes. Ransom is a filter that prevents new/IP users from making too many changes per hour. I saw you made many changes on en:Depok page and that's the reason you were stopped, sorry. I saw your contributions were constructive and valuable for us so please feel free to add them, just keep in mind not to save your edits too many times during one hour. If you have more questions, just let me know. Warm regards, IBAlex 12:21, 30 January 2013 (EST)

Wuerttemburg: castle? palace?

I have ancestors from Deutschland, I believe from Stuttgart, who settled in a German-Swiss community in what eventually became Morgan County, Tennessee, United States, forming the town of Wartburg, which, I am told, was named after a famous castle or palace: possibly Wuerttemburg? All of this is important/interesting only to me, but if someone would be so kind, I would like to know the origin of Wartburg.

I haven't yet created an account, but on enWikipedia, I'm known as Ragityman, and I can also be reached at ragityman(at) If you would rather respond here, other tourists might find the info useful, or not. Postscript:

I find this to be an excellent project. I just wish it was part of the enWP/Wikimedia projects as far as universal log-in. I don't wish to create more identities/passwords. too many to remember now. 17:05, 13 February 2013 (EST) aka: Ragityman

Renaming a file name and caption

I have uploaded a file, and accidentally it had the wrong name and caption (should be Underground, instead of Underwater). I have been going crazing trying to find out how it's possible to rename the name and the caption. I follow help link to help link and so far nothing. After reading the help info, what is was able to find out is that only admin, file movers, and a few other groups can do it. Since I don't have that op right, I wasn't able to find out: who should I contact in order to request that file and caption rename. Does anyone how to help me? And I think it would be helpful if that info is not more clear on help documentation.

Thank you for your post. I am an admin here and I would gladly help you. Please let me know how you would like to name the file and I will do it for you. Is that a file you are referring to [14]? The best way to ask for help on Wikitravel is simply to leave a message on the Travellers' Pub, just as you did. I've been checking Pub regularly and I'm doing my best to solve all the problems. You can also contact me on my User Page. Thanks! IBAlex 12:35, 11 December 2012 (EST)
Yes, it's that image. Thanks, IBAlex.
That image I used in [15], the link must also be updated. I don't known if you can also do that, so the broken link has less lifetime. Since the place where I'm now, there isn't always power nor internet.
I managed to change only the caption from "Underwater" to "Underground" but I'm unable to change the name of the file. What you can do is to upload a new version of the file by clicking here [16].
The link is not broken because the name of the page you uploaded the picture on is Sabang (Palawan) and not just Sabang. I hope this helps. Cheers, IBAlex 17:22, 13 December 2012 (EST)
Finally I arrive into a place where internet is fast enough to upload a new file. I uploaded [17], and updated the link in Sabang (Palawan).
So the [18] file is no longer needed, is there any possibility that you can delete it?
Sure! I just deleted it. Cheers, IBAlex 11:06, 21 December 2012 (EST)

Finnish Wikitravel need some help

Hey, we have a problem in Finnish Wikitravel. We have some IP user ([19] & [20]) making lot of trash by spamming articles from Finnish Wikipedia and Swedish Wikipedia via Google Translate... There are no active admins in Finnish version of Wikitravel. So, could someone come to help us and delete articles from these categories: [21] & [22]. Roquai 12:56, 9 October 2012 (EDT)

Is it all from that same IP?--IBobi talk email 13:25, 9 October 2012 (EDT)
All from IP & IP Same person. Roquai 13:44, 9 October 2012 (EDT)
We will block the IPs and revert the spam pages. Thanks for keeping an eye out! Have you considered being an admin for the Finnish site?--IBobi talk email 13:46, 9 October 2012 (EDT)
I am quite sporadic visitor and contributor in Finnish Wikitravel. So I think it would be not good idea to be admin for the Finnish project. But, thanks for cleaning ”our” project. :) Roquai 14:19, 9 October 2012 (EDT)

We have still almost 300 pages waiting for deletion in Finnish Wikitravel: [23]. Almost all of those are made by the same IP... Roquai 09:13, 13 October 2012 (EDT)

There is the same problem in Spanish, Hungarian & [24], Italian, Polish Wikitravel... Roquai 11:58, 15 October 2012 (EDT)

Finnish and Spanish are done! - IBcash 15:26, 17 October 2012 (EDT)

Done. Thank you.--IBobi talk email 14:29, 1 November 2012 (EDT)

Reading the Cope section for Helsinki, I recognised text that had been copied from the Stockholm page, some of it written by me. I have never been to Helsinki. These comments only apply to Stockholm. The revision that copied the Stockholm article was: Revision as of 07:43, 1 January 2013 by I compared that revision with the previous version and attempted to remove the text that was copied from the Stockholm article, but my attempt to remove the copied text was blocked as an "unconstructive edit".

Thank you for letting us know. I have replied to your message on EN Wikitravel and I have also reverted the copied content on Helsinki page. thank you! Your IP doesn't seem to be blocked, was it the user account? Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 16:38, 1 April 2013 (EDT)

Put an image from Wikimedia Commons directly

Hi. Patrolling the ja: edition, I noticed that we can extract the images not from WTS, but from Wikimedia Commons directly (as you can see like this).

I just want to know:

What happened (I think we couldn’t do this before. Is there any technical improvement or policy change(s))?

Do you have (or going to set up) any policy when we want to put the images on the WT pages, not just from WTS but directly from the WMC (Such as delete those pictures from the pages when we find them, since they are not from the WTS)? Well, but it seems we have legally no problem to use those pictures to the WT pages directly, because both WTS and WMC are based on the same license (i.e. cc-by-sa 3.0) right now, and to get some specific image(s) from WMC to WTS is quite common for us)?

Please tell me what should I do when I find those pictures.--Shoestring 05:43, 9 March 2013 (EST)

Hello Shoestring! Nice to hear from you! I hope you are doing fine. Let me comment on the question you asked.
  1. Our policy is that All images used on WT should first be imported to WTS.
  2. Even though WMC does have the same license; we would prefer to not import from WMC as it can negatively affect our search standing (the content is seen as duplicate of WMC content once it's copied here), but it may still happen.
Do you mind making a note on the JA Travellers' Pub clarifying this issue so that the community knows what our policy is? We would appreciate that. Thank you! Warm regards, IBAlex 16:01, 11 March 2013 (EDT)
Hi Alex, thank you for your advice. I put the translation of your comment on the ja: traveler’s pub.
For your information, when I found the beautiful image on en: and tried to import it directly from en: to ja: by put its file name on the article (since it was not up on the shared), the article displayed quite different image on the Commons, since their name was quite the same.--Shoestring 21:24, 16 March 2013 (EDT)
Shoestring, thank you very much for your time to translate the message! It's highly appreciated!
Let me explain it. All the images should be first uploaded on WT Shared. It happened that users were previously uploading picture on EN WT (and not on Shared) even if was explicitly written Please do not upload pictures here, I'm taking about this page [25]. That's why when you take a picture from EN WT to other WT, the picture might display differently. In this situation I suggest re-uploading the picture to WT Shared and taking it from there to JA WT. I hope this helps:) all the best, IBAlex 11:55, 18 March 2013 (EDT)

"Ransom" problem

Been adding to the County Cavan get in - by bus section - just adding ordinary content and place names and the editing system identified my action as ransom?! Content was civil and in order - the only possible action which could be amiss is that I was adding content in raid spurts rather than in one go. Puts me off contributing if my actions are being misunderstood by the system. any help appreciated, thanks in advance 21:33, 12 March 2013 (EDT)Brf1000

Hello! Thank you for your message. I am here to help you and I will explain everything. Wikitravel has several abuse filters that protect the site form potential spammers or vandals who come to the site and make lots of malicious changes. This is happening often as Wikitravel has lots of traffic and the content is user generated. Unfortunately, sometimes filters stop users from making edits that are constructive. Ransom is a filter that prevents new users/IP addresses from making too many changes per hour. I saw you made many changes on County Cavan page and that's the reason you were stopped, sorry for that. I saw your contributions were constructive and valuable to travelers so please feel free to add them, just keep in mind not to save your edits too many times during one hour. Thank you! If you have more questions, just let me know. Thank you for your understanding. Warm regards, IBAlex 13:32, 13 March 2013 (EDT)
In this proximate case the explanatory messages need to explain this filter in more detail so as not to dissuade good contributors like this one. --118dot93dot73dot30 00:06, 17 March 2013 (EDT)

I live on St. Croix, and run a business. This morning a guest came in off of the cruise ship looking for Tommy's Scooter Rentals. THEY DO NOT EXIST!!!!! I have lived here for over 4 years, and they haven't existed since I've been here. Someone needs to seriously update this sight.

Hi! Which page are you talking about? Wikitravel is a crowdsourced travel guide that anybody can edit. Please plunge forward and change the info. Cheers! IBAlex (talk) 14:07, 5 April 2013 (EDT)

Abuse on Rome page

When I pulled up the Rome [26] page, I saw that it had been redirected to, along with its Talk page. All of the history on the page and its talk page was blank. I removed the redirect for both pages, then googled until I was able to find an old version of the page ([27]) and copy/pasted the content.

I hope that an admin can locate the original page, and restore the discussion and history fully.

Thank you for reporting that! We highly appreciate your help! All vandalism has been reverted now and the Rome page is fine. Thanks again! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 12:37, 8 April 2013 (EDT)

ja: bug report along with the system maintenance held in the end of this March

Hi IB techs, a bug report from ja:.

(Probably) along with your system maintenance held at the end of this March, we have some malfunctioning on the ja: pages as listed below:

When we edit and browse the ja: pages under the log in status:

  • The page index at the top left of the pages does not display (when we browse the pages under the log out status, that function (i.e. display the index) is totally no problem).
  • The "months" index, usually displays at the bottom of each sub page of 祭やイベント (events and festivals) (by using {{Month}} tug) does not display (ditto).
  • Tugs at the top of the user preferences page are unusable (so far the page is fixed at the "user profile" tug, and we cannot change the pages even if we click the other tugs).
  • For admin users, part of the collective patrol functions seem to be disabled (we can check and patrol some previous edits at one time, but we cannot display each edit one by one, even if we want to).

When we browse the ja: pages regardless of log in or log out status:

  • "Related pages" (the function for displaying the related pages on the sidebar, by using the {{Related}} tug) is malfunctioned.

Also, here is a resubmit request, the bug on ja: Wikitravel Mobile Version once reported by 木更津乃風.

We think some of the vital functions are disabled so far, which cause us very much inconvenience when we want to edit and browse ja: pages.

We are very happy if you could check the system and fix them as soon as possible.--Shoestring (talk) 11:06, 20 April 2013 (EDT)

Shoestring, thanks so much! I reported all the bugs to our IT department. I will keep you posted how things are going. Thank you so much! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:55, 23 April 2013 (EDT)
Dear Shoestring, we are trying now to fix all the bugs you mentioned. Could you please provide some screenshots that could help us with solving the problem. Thank you very much for your cooperation! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:39, 26 April 2013 (EDT)
Hi Alex, thank you very much for your response and sorry for not to give you any reply soon (I had no chance to check the pages for a couple of days).
I checked ja: pages concerning the requests I gave you the other days, and seems so far that nothing has changed yet.--Shoestring (talk) 10:33, 28 April 2013 (EDT)
Shoestring, thank you for your response. We are still working to fix those bugs and we would appreciate some of your help. Could you please send us screenshots with the issues, with log in status and log out status, together with the page links. We would need screenshots and links for the following issues:
  1. The page index at the top left of the pages;
  2. The "months" index;
  3. Tugs at the top of the user preferences page;
  4. collective patrol functions, admin users;
  5. Related pages on the sidebar;
Looking forward to your answer! Thank you! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:09, 29 April 2013 (EDT)

Hi Alex, I apologize for my delayed response. I went to Southeast Asia last week.

In regard to your request, I uploaded screenshots as follows:

Request "No. 4" seems recovered, so I don’t upload the shot this time. Your cooperation would be very much helpful.--Shoestring (talk) 00:15, 12 May 2013 (EDT)

There is a big mistake about Topic - Respect.

I am a frequent traveller to Kuala Lumpur, and I have a lots of friends being the members of Barisan National. I don't see there is any "danger" to stay along with them. Obviously, the message in "Respect" is composed by the opposition party with disrespect and bias.

In a travel advising website, accusing a political party is completely unrelated to tourist. I urge this website to correct it ASAP and gives the international traveller a true, fair comment about Malaysia's political environment. —The preceding comment was added by (talkcontribs), thank you for this message! Please know that Wikitravel is a guide written by the Travelers for the Travelers. Anybody can edit Wikitravel and add their own information as long as it meets our policies. Getting OpenID back

Is there any chance that the OpenID log-in will be enabled again? I seem to have lost access to my account, because I have used the method and without registering password and email. (ok, it could have been months since it was disabled - I'm an infrequent user) -- 11:16, 8 May 2013 (EDT)

I don't believe it was possible to register via OpenID in the past, which is why it was disabled. What is your username? You may want to simply register a new account.--IBobi talk email 13:30, 8 May 2013 (EDT)
It's no huge loss but does looks very amateurish to disable it and then have it still mentioned on the log-in pages.
Has all technical development now ceased?

Listing on Australia page

This business closed six years ago. It should be removed from the Wiki Travel Australia website. My wife and I owned and set it up and ran it for six years. The property now appears to be run as a holiday house to let under the name Blue Water House. It is not the same business.

Which business are we talking about? Caould you please provide some details? Thank you, IBAlex (talk) 14:13, 3 June 2013 (EDT)

Abuse on Johannesburg page

I noticed what appears to be spam in the Johannesburg page. I have no knowledge of this location, it just seems obvious! It appears at the very end of the "See"section. This is a copy of the text in question: Janine, Parkmore, Sandton, ☎ 0726218581, [33]. Save up to 50% on Shuttle Services, Taxi and Cab Services, Limo Hire and Party Bus Hire. Hundreds of Companies compete for your business on MyRide edit 05:00, 3 June 2013 (EDT)

Dear, thank you for letting us know! We appreciate your help! I have just removed this spam information. Obviously, Shuttle Services don't belong to section "See".

Please fix your problem in introduction! -VANK, a non-governmental organization of Korea-

Hello, my name is Park Ha-eun, and I am a student of Dokjeong elementary school in South Korea. I am a member of VANK, which is an abbreviation of Voluntary Agency Network of Korea. VANK is a non-governmental organization, and we take a great effort to solve history distortions or wrong image of Korea.

We found out that your picture in the introduction about Japan has a slight mistake. The body of water between Korea and Japan has been marked as "Sea of Japan". However, evidently, "Sea of Japan" is not a correct name at all. It has been called as "Sea of Japan" since Korea has been Japan's colony. But, now we are a independent country as Korea, and the exact name is "East Sea".

Additionally, the worldwide mapmaker, National Geographics, and the travel guidebook, Lonely Planet Publication, has promised us to use the name "East Sea" as well. We would be delightful if you mark our sea as both of the names, "Sea of Japan" and "East Sea". Thank you for reading and we would appreciate your favorable consideration. We would be grateful for your explanation as to why you chose to use ‘Sea of Japan’. Please email us at

Sincerely, Park Ha-eun

Hello Park Ha-eun! Thank you for your message and concern about accuracy of our articles!

Hello, I have several months trying to add a hotel to the list of hotels in Taganga ads (Santa Marta, Colombia) can you tell me what to do to make the ad remains on the list, thanks.

—The preceding comment was added by User: (talkcontribs)

Hello there. Well first of all listings as well call them in Wikitravel can not be promotional aka in the interest of the business owner, but need to be for the interest of the travelers. Secondly in the listings we do not use first person pronouns (I, You, We, Us and so on) as User:IBAlex stated in her summary in the history of page edits on the Taganga page. Please comment underneath here if something remains unclear. Lastly you could create a user so we can communicate better, you'll get your own shiny space to edit and for people to talk to you! --OVK (talk) 13:01, 7 July 2013 (EDT)

Houston 1940 Air Terminal Museum

I am a new contributor to Wikitravel. I made a recent addition i.e., the 1940 Air Terminal Museum in Houston, Texas. I made at least two errors, but don't know how to correct them.

1) I placed the article under the "Buy" section and it should be moved to the "Do" section.

2) The link to the museum web site, does not work.

Can anyone help me correct those errors?

Thanks —The preceding comment was added by User: (talkcontribs)

Thank you for you message! Everything should be ok now, please have a look. If you would like to add/ change information within the article, please click on Edit at the top right corner of each article (next to "Read" and "View History"). That's what I did to move your listing from section "Buy" to section "Do". The URL didn't work because it was missing "http://". I hope that now everything is clear. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thank you for your contributions on Wikitravel! Please keep it up! Cheers! IBAlex (talk) 15:08, 8 July 2013 (EDT)

Malaysia page filled with racist and irrelevant information....

I like to read articles for balanced information. Unfortunately, the article on Malaysia has some paragraphs on Malaysia being a "shithole," with many derogatory comments about Muslims, including that they "breed 8-15 f**kt***ds" etc..... Seeing this interferes with my ability to enjoy reading the article, but I do not have an account. If someone could do something about this, that would be great. Furthermore, I wish to add that such comments do not belong on wikitravel, and I think they should be removed. —The preceding comment was added by (talkcontribs)

Right or wrong uploads

I did upload several pictures by other authors and everything seems correct to me, but i have some doubts regarding few of them. So in order to save my time and time of others i would not want to wait until somebody will notice inaccuracies when everything is "too late". Can i ask to check my uploads and tell whether they are right (and therefore can be used on Wikitravel) or they are not appropriate and can't be used as illustrations on Wikitravel pages? I don't see where else i could ask such almost personal question. The problem is with people in the photos - i have read carefully everything what has been said in this respect and generally everything is clear and comprehensible. Still i have no competence to decide what kind of "crowd in public spaces" is suitable for Wikitravel, where is a line when people are already "peripheral to the picture content" and when they "are not peripheral enough" to be suitable for use of the photo on Wikitravel. In other words i need only clear instruction which pictures can't be used, no explanations are needed. The pictures are these: first, second, third.

One more similar question: if the "crowd" is in public space and all people are only performers and spectators, all are identifiable and not "peripheral to the picture content" because they are the content itself - what then? Not a crowd in a market or so, but a certain performance where everybody (both performers and spectators) are willing to be in the limelight, and the photo serves as an illustration of the certain event that travelers are more than welcome, and they of course would know that they can be photographed or filmed (by private person or TV) too. Such an informative picture of the crowd, non of the people predominates, no one plays to the camera. Yes or no?

It may be that in the future i'll have same question about other photos with other people - can i ask it again (then where) or should i not disturb? --Kazys (talk) 13:16, 25 July 2013 (EDT)

Kazys, thank you for your message! I'm happy you asked this question and I will gladly help you! Exactly as you said: identifiable people in a picture should be peripheral to the picture content. That's why all the pictures you uploaded are good as their main purpose is to show buildings, attractions and or city's infrastructure. People are just peripheral.
Your second question is more difficult. I would say that pictures that show crowd attending a public event or festival are fine. We do have exceptions for photos that show a particular sports or activities or crowd scenes or illustrating some costume or uniform. I saw many pictures like that, for example: here and here. That's why I would say that you are fine if you upload a picture that illustrates a certain event that would be of a traveler's interest. I would love to see those pictures. Maybe we can feature them on our Events News page? Thank you for all the pictures you have already uploaded! Great job! Please keep it up. If you need any help you can always write a message here on the traveler's Pub or contact me directly via my talk Page. Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:52, 25 July 2013 (EDT)

kosovo not serbia

kosovo is indenpendent, —The preceding comment was added by (talkcontribs)

Dear IP address, please check Wikitravel Kosovo page to see that nothing like that is written there. The first words of the article say Kosovo (Albanian: Kosova, Serbian: Kосово и Метохија, Kosovo i Metohija) is a disputed territory and de facto independent country in South Eastern Europe. After a lengthy and often violent dispute with Serbia, Kosovo declared independence in February 2008 and (as of 16 October 2012) 93 UN states recognise this and it has become a member country of the IMF and World Bank as the Republic of Kosovo, despite heavy Serbian opposition. Issues with picture Upload

Dear Team Wikitravel,

I'm finding issues for uploading pictures to a content on Darjeeling.

Inspite of entering the wikitravel mainpage with valid Login ID/password, while uploading pictures, the webpage is again asking for login ID/password

Even after re-entering the same login ID/password,the page doesn't accept.

Plz assist soon.

Hello Shubham! Great question! We upload pictures to Wikitravel Shared, which is the central coordination point and shared repository for images and other media for all language versions of Wikitravel. Wikitravel and Wikitravel Shared are separate platforms that require 2 separate accounts. Please use this page to upload pictures. You would be asked to create a separate account for Wikitravel Shared (I assume you already have one for Wikitravel). After you upload a picture, please add this picture to Wikitravel article. If you have some questions, let me know. I realize all this might be confusing. Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 15:02, 27 September 2013 (EDT)

Walking tours

Hi IBAlex,

I read tour listings and I have the question. I'm not the tour operator, I'm just draw the routes throughout different cities and share them in open access in my blog and in my app for iPhone - [32]. I think it should be interesting for wikitravel users, but if you find that publishing my routes in the list of the activities is incorrect, please, suggest me how to do it the right way. Pinmyway (talk) 01:05, 3 October 2013 (EDT)

Hello Pinmyway! Thank you for your question. Please know that we do not list walking tours in our guides because we believe that travelers could fulfill the tours on their own using Wikitravel guides. In our guides we list all the attractions and interesting places to see and we leave it up to the Traveler to decide what to see in the particular city. You might consider creating an itinerary however be advised not to include any external links. I hope this helps! It would be great to see your edits here. Please let me know if everything is clear. Thanks! IBAlex (talk) 19:57, 3 October 2013 (EDT)

Tags and preferred link format

Hi all, it seems there's a bit of an issue with see/eat/sleep tags that contain URLs. That is, there is the preferred link format in the instructions (, but that's not how the official tags apparently behave (the produce "old-style", "footnote" links). Therefore, a contributor is presented with an alternative of breaking either the visual appearance (by using tags and getting the footnote links) or the markup part (by manually formatting the link and so moving part of the info out of the tag). Broken markup is not as geek-only a problem as it may seem: those little edit buttons depend on tags, and the fields in the edit dialogs correspond to tag attributes. Long story short, it seems that if the 'new blue' external link format is here to stay, then the visual behavior of tags must be aligned with it. Am I missing something maybe? (It maybe concerns only en.wikitravel, but it's a tech issue, so I was told to bring it up on shared) AntonBryl (talk) 17:51, 20 November 2013 (EST)

Hi! Thank you for reporting that! We are aware of this issue. The problem is that the "Add listing" box was created by one of Wikitravel users a while ago and now it's not easy to change it. "Add Listing" option is not a MediaWiki extension that we would be able to fix and change the settings. But we will try our best. My approach is that when a user edits a wiki and adds listing manually (using wikimarkup), he/ she should not create footnote style links (just as the policy page says). However, we have many users who use the "Add Listing" boxes and are not aware of proper URLs formats. With the amount of these kind of edits it's almost impossible to change the URLs manually afterwards. Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 20:59, 20 November 2013 (EST)
Hi! As far as I understand, there is no need to change the tag addition/editing process; the issue is how <see> and the similar tags are rendered (in particular, what they do with the value in the 'url' attribute). If that is fixed, everything must work ok with the old dialogs. I guess there is a piece of xslt (or of html-generating script) for this somewhere? AntonBryl (talk) 04:40, 21 November 2013 (EST)
So, is the rendering of listing tags configurable? If yes, they just need to be reconfigured. If no, it just means it's hardcoded somewhere. Either way, it cannot be a big problem to fix I guess... AntonBryl (talk) 14:41, 22 November 2013 (EST)
Hi Anton. Few words about that “tag issue” you encountered recently. I myself am “technically illiterate”, so can't judge whether it is a big problem to fix it or not a big problem. Just those “good external links” and URL tags are not the only “problem”, there are more. For example: there are the fields for coordinates, you can insert them but they won't be displayed. I see you did such edit already, so your edit is not visible on the article page. In some cases coordinates are very useful, so then one have to write them in the description or so. Those which are in the fields can be left just for the “better future”, so to speak. Next, there is a field called “directions” which is supposed to explain something if the address is not sufficient. Simple text works, but more sophisticated text doesn't, e.g. if you add quotation marks the whole field won't be displayed. Theres is something else that won't be displayed, so I usually try to double check everything. If I see that the edit is invisible I move the text before the form, just like the name with “good” external link, making the visual appearance to look correct, but the “edit” page looks “broken” then, so to speak. In my experience on several occasions some other users moved the “directions” to their appropriate field, but they became then invisible on the article's page, I had to move them back. So certain effort was made obviously with the good intentions, but all that effort was meaningless. And other fields also have certain limitations that sometimes become the obstacle. So, I mean, if you, say, fix the problem with those external links, the other problems will remain? I actually edited several pages manually (only manually) and didn't perceive that as a problem, only very simple and primitive listings work with all tags as intended, but if there is something more sophisticated or unusual you have to find a new solution every time. I try to focus on a visual appearance and to maintain it correct. The reader then reads and understands everything. But on the “edit” page each listing looks differently. I just share my experience with you because those “problems” doesn't seem to me very relevant, and if they need to be fixed then probably would be better to fix them all at a time. --Kazys (talk) 06:49, 25 November 2013 (EST)

Problem with spamblocker, cannot edit any page

This is a problem from not logged in and from logged in accounts. -- 04:10, 30 November 2013 (EST)

The English wikitravel looks like it is having a technical problem. I can no longer edit anything, either from logged in or not logged in. Even just to add nonwikitext text or delete a link. Getting the spamblock error message on everything. I can edit here, so it is a wiki-specific issue currently. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 04:12, 30 November 2013 (EST)
Everything appears to be working now. --Jeffmcneill (talk) 22:17, 30 November 2013 (EST)
