The Travellers' pub—your watering hole on Wikitravel

The Travellers' pub is where Wikitravellers of all languages get to together to talk about Wikitravel, and where you can ask for help if you're confused, lost, afraid, tired or annoyed by Wikitravel. Please check the FAQ and Help page before asking a question, though, since that may save your time and others'.

If you have question about travel, not the website, try the Travellers' pubs in your language edition of Wikitravel.

If you are having a problem that you think has to do with the Mediawiki software, please post that on the technical requests page instead.

Please add new questions at the bottom of the page and sign your post by appending four tildes (~~~~) to it, but otherwise plunge forward!

There are archives available for this page. Please do not edit the archives - instead, start a new thread.

line 88 states "During the English occupation, the grain silos were modified into stores for water." The British were invited to the island of Malta to oust the French.

It can be found within Wikipedia 'Malta Protectorate' that: "In June 1802, 104 representatives from the Maltese towns and villages signed a declaration entitled La Dichiarazione dei Diritti degli abitanti delle Isole di Malta e Gozo (The Declaration of Rights of the inhabitants of the Islands of Malta and Gozo) by which they proclaimed George III to be their king, and that he had no right to surrender Malta to another power. By the Declaration they also proclaimed that Malta should be self-governing while under British protection"

Gozo was certainly not therefore ever under "English occupation" and it is my understanding that as recently as 1956 77% of a vote wanted Malta & Gozo to become part of the United Kingdom.

Editing You can freely edit the article on Malta. If something is incorrect, please delete or revise it. Koavf (talk) 13:29, 29 August 2014 (EDT)

In updating Nakhon Ratchasima I was working on the Korat Hotel in the midrange hotels section. Going into the update section everything looks normal, but looking at the page after logout, it has become entangled with the splurge section and the hotel from there.

Also, I was updating Mahasarakham and was inserting how to pronounce the place. It took the edit away from being reedited and made a mess of the section.

Apologies................. Please fix. Avemario.

Page protection and vandalism on RU WT[edit]

Some pages on the RU Wikitravel need to be protected from abusive political vandalism and to prevent revision wars. I think Wiki is not a place for politics, and the information needs to be objective and clear and not need to meet anyone's point of view on the situation in the world. These pages include Украина‎, Россия, Русь, Восточная Европа‎, Киев and some others. Dia (talk) 09:42, 26 September 2014 (EDT)

Admins Have you spoken with any of the admins on that edition? I am one of them but I don't know Russian, so it would be difficult for me to mediate. If you need me, let me know. Koavf (talk) 12:05, 26 September 2014 (EDT)
I was trying to reverse the vandal's changes a couple of times but it just result in an auto-ban. I see by the recent changes that these vandals are operating for some time now. I wrote to some of the admins but don't get any response. The changes to some of the pages are very offensive, so I think they need to be fixed asap. Dia (talk) 13:00, 26 September 2014 (EDT)
Protection It looks like the only Russian-speaking admin is Olga Z. Have you spoken with her? Koavf (talk) 13:29, 26 September 2014 (EDT)
It seems that all of admins abandoned RU edition :( Dia (talk) 15:47, 26 September 2014 (EDT)
I'm here I'll help. I'm just letting you know that I don't have proficiency in your language. It will be difficult but I'm willing to do it. Koavf (talk) 01:56, 27 September 2014 (EDT)
Ok. I think to start with the following pages' last revisions need to be reverted and protected from editing. At least temporarily. You can try to just revert, but you can look at the recent changes there that I tried many times. The vandals are relentless. Русь, Россия, Восточная Европа, Северо-запад России, Киев, Эстония, Украина, also this template needs to be fixed Шаблон:В Dia (talk) 05:47, 27 September 2014 (EDT)

Hi guys, and thank you for your effort! In the meantime, I'll report that to Wikitravel HQ. Hopefully they'll have somebody competent! PierrB (talk) 01:16, 28 September 2014 (EDT)

Any updates on this? Dia (talk) 13:36, 1 October 2014 (EDT)
Still here I haven't forgotten you--this is still a tab in my browser. I'm just working through a lot of stuff online and in real life. Sorry. I will get to it but in 12 hours at the earliest. Koavf (talk) 14:41, 1 October 2014 (EDT)
12 days later I still see Eastern europe referred as bunch of puppet and semi-independent states. No, I mean why do I even care? Dia (talk) 05:44, 13 October 2014 (EDT)
Language barrier This is really tricky as I don't understand your language or even your script. As you can see, I deleted your userpage on ru because it was made up of slurs. I've tried to get to the bottom of this but it's difficult without knowing Russian, Cyrillic, or any Slavic language. Koavf (talk) 06:01, 13 October 2014 (EDT)
Thanks You can ask me for help with this. I mentioned a couple of pages that need to be fixed earlier. It is not hard, as you can see my attempts to revert them to proper revisions in history. Also unbanning me there would be appreciated. Dia (talk) 07:06, 13 October 2014 (EDT)

Unblocking In case you hadn't noticed, I unblocked you there. Simply put, it was my best option for you maybe getting a handle on what's happening at ru. Koavf (talk) 04:11, 16 October 2014 (EDT)

Hi, just to let you know that a new russian speaking admin is currently training, so I am sure she will also have a look at it soon. Adzas (talk) 06:31, 16 October 2014 (EDT)
Thanks for unblocking. I fixed a couple of pages to see how the vandals will act. Also I hope the admin would see their actions and take appropriate measures. Dia (talk) 16:04, 16 October 2014 (EDT)
Hello, Dia! I'm IBcaldera, the new touch point between our community and HQ. I want to thank you for reaching out and bringing this up. RU language has been under attack for quite sometime and we've finally secured a new admin to help revert as much of the craziness that's happened there. She is Triskelle, please feel free to introduce yourself on her usertalk page on RU. If you're using the same username there too I'll make sure she drops in and says hello =). I love your idea on protecting pages. It seems that this is the only way for the moment, it's unfortunate, but it's true! Hang tight as we try to save the RU wing! IBcaldera (talk) 16:53, 17 October 2014 (EDT)
I'm glad that everything seems to turn out fine and I hope RU branch will recuperate from soon. Dia (talk) 18:36, 18 October 2014 (EDT)

There definitely should be a way to avoid autoblock when reverting all these vandal revisions. Could I ask for unblocking again? :) Dia (talk) 09:24, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

Done You're free to edit again. There must be a problem with the spam filter thinking that you are spamming. Koavf (talk) 11:45, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

There is definitely something wrong. I can't revert changes in Таджикистан I get blocked immediately. Dia (talk) 12:08, 22 October 2014 (EDT)
User rights As an admin, I can't change user rights--only a bureaucrat can. By the way, what on Earth is this vandalism about Tajikistan? Is there some movement amongst Russians to annex it or something? Koavf (talk) 15:01, 22 October 2014 (EDT)
Not annexing :) There was a article about genocide of Russian people. Also the same article is in Узбекистан page. All of these changes and vandalism carries one of the popular ideas in Russia: Russians are the chosen nation, all other countries are trying to conquer/enslave them, all the lands that at some point were in USSR or Russian Empire must return to their rightful (as they think) owner. That's why annexing of Crimea met support in Russia. Plus all the propaganda. And that's imperialism in Russian in a nutshell :) Dia (talk) 15:53, 22 October 2014 (EDT)
Genocide? To be frank, the idea of keeping a Russian-language travel guide neutral and fair seems like a Herculean task. As an American, I've really only seen nationalism that rivals our own from Chinese and Russians. Maybe our countries are just too big. Koavf (talk) 04:10, 23 October 2014 (EDT)
I'm beginning to think that 1 admin for RU wing is not enough :) These guys are either fanatical about changing the wikitravel to align with their ideology or they are being paid to do that. Dia (talk) 10:04, 23 October 2014 (EDT)

Subnetwork block There is a pattern in the IP addresses used to make vandal changes. Is there such capabilities in this wiki to ban the whole subnet? Dia (talk) 15:01, 26 October 2014 (EDT)

Hi, we have ways to block blocks of addresses, I will let those involved know. Thanks again! Adzas (talk) 17:26, 26 October 2014 (EDT)
Hello, yes we do! What a fortune to find a pattern. I can't speak or read Russian, can you please link me to an edit made by one of those IPs? I'd appreciate it!! IBcaldera (talk) 16:49, 27 October 2014 (EDT)

IPs Check my edits and logs. Koavf (talk) 22:52, 27 October 2014 (EDT)
Also check out these blocks. You'll see the pattern I was talking about. Dia (talk) 07:51, 28 October 2014 (EDT)
Cool, I just range blocked based on two of those ranges(both starting with 217) hope this helps! keep me posted! IBcaldera (talk) 14:09, 28 October 2014 (EDT)

Hello, please have a look at our Imphal and Kohima articles, you may find some information there that can help you. Have a great trip! Adzas (talk) 07:13, 7 October 2014 (EDT)

What are the advantages of starting a Wikitravel site in my language, compared to just running my own MediaWiki website focused on tourism?[edit]

Does WikiTravel provide a lot of reusable features, or some other advantage, that makes it worth following this site's process/guidelines? Apologies if this is already covered elsewhere, but couldn't find it in the FAQ HaEr48 (talk) 03:00, 16 October 2014 (EDT)

Community One thing that would come to mind is that if you wanted to start an expedition in a new language here, there would already be a pre-existing flock of fellow editors, some of whom might be interested in helping you. It's exceedingly difficult to start a community from scratch. Another alternative is using another wiki community which already exists to host a travel guide in your language--this effectively splits the difference. Is your question hypothetical or did you have something concrete in mind? I don't know what you mean by "reusable features" but the content here is freely licensed, as is the software, so you can exactly reproduce this content elsewhere with some caveats. Koavf (talk) 04:10, 16 October 2014 (EDT)
What I mean is, if I'm thinking about building a wiki-based travel guide website in my language (Indonesian), what would be the advantage of doing in through Wikitravel, compared to just running my own MediaWiki website? I understand the software can be freely used. HaEr48 (talk) 22:57, 17 October 2014 (EDT)
Hosting Sure. Some other things come to mind: you will have essentially free hosting and tech support, you won't have to buy a domain name, your work here at Wikitravel has a pretty high SEO rank (so it will be found by search engines easily). Again, these are things that immediately come to mind. I've heard that configuring MediaWiki can be a nightmare sometimes but I don't know about that firsthand. GPS coordinates for locations[edit]

What is the best way to add GPS coordinates to a location?

They are really helpful, especially if addresses (let alone names) do not exist. Using "lat" and "long" (as suggested in is not helpful, because the values are not displayed.

Is there any best practice to follow? I am sure a link to bing or google maps or OSM (depending on who offers the best picture material) would be appreciated by a lot of travellers. Also with those GPS enabled smartphones everywhere it is really helpful to mark points in advance on a map. E.g. your hotel, etc. One could even start to put together a route consisting of hotels/POI/etc.

Two remarks:

  • It would be nice to have a technical solution (one where you could click on the coordinates and they would show up in a map (e.g. OSM) or even better: you could aggregate them to some kind of list to get a .gpx file with your route/POI.
  • However, as a quick solution a unified way (format, layout, etc.) of just showing the GPS coordinates would be nice. This could also be helpful if at a later stage someone decides to do something (s.a.) with this data. Also this quick solution would not require any technical work. I would prefer a format that (if no interactive behavior is planned) can easily be copied&pasted into any online map (e.g. "GPS: 53.421822, -2.315918").

Thanks! User4353 (talk) 04:17, 17 October 2014 (EDT)

Make email addresses SPAM safe[edit]

If I enter an email address of a business/hotel/contact person I fear that a spambot will spam the recipient. Is there any standardized way/best practice to prohibit this? E.g using example`àt´ or obfuscate the email address in any other way? Especially for small locations/hotels/semi business mail addresses this may be an issue and I think they should be protected as far as possible. Thanks!
