Tech:Wrong romanization of Japanese categories
From Wikitravel Shared
[edit] What happens
The robogenerated categories for Japanese prefectures are all written in Kunrei romanization (which is evil), while the places under those prefectures are written mostly-but-not-entirely in Hepburn (which is in line with en:Wikitravel:Romanization). Eg. Chiba prefecture is Category:Tiba (bad), but the city itself is Category:Chiba (good), and then you've got mutant offspring like Category:Shirahama (Tiba) where Shirahama is Hepburn and Tiba is Kunrei.
There's also some similar brain-damage for Finnish categories, where we now have eg. Category:Länsi-Suomen lääni and Category:Western Finland — which are the same thing, only one's in English and the other one is in extra-umlauty Klingon. Jpatokal 23:36, 15 December 2006 (EST)

[edit] How to fix it
Delete all the robocategories for Japan and rebuild them correctly. Evan, if you can give me your master list of prefectures, I can Hepburnify it. Jpatokal 23:36, 15 December 2006 (EST)
- Bumpity-bump. Jpatokal 21:50, 26 December 2006 (EST)
- It's not clear to me what you want. Do you need something besides Category:Japan? Do you want the list of all categories that are sub-categories of any of these categories? --Evan 13:22, 4 January 2007 (EST)
- I presume you have a data file or some sort for these, so I'd be happy to edit that directly -- or what data do you need and what format? Jpatokal 22:09, 4 January 2007 (EST)
- I used the subdivision codes from UN/LOCODE. They're originally from ISO 3166-2, so that might be why the romanization is different. Their list of Japanese subdivisions [1] shows a second name that looks more like what I'm used to, so I'm guessing it's the romanization you speak of. If that's the case, I can probably do a move with, say, pywikipediabot. --Evan 12:39, 11 January 2007 (EST)
- Yup, the names in brackets are correct (=Hepburn). Regrettably the ISO standard is Kunrei, which is why ISO 3166-2 also uses it, but nobody else does... Jpatokal 23:14, 11 January 2007 (EST)
- Bump. So, can you fix this? Jpatokal 01:22, 4 March 2007 (EST)
It seems that delete and rebuild is not in progress. If so, I want to arrange categories related to Chiba(Tiba) prefecture in Japan by manual work. In this work, I will create a new Category:~ disused categories in Japan under Category:Japan, and put Kunrei romanization or userhostile categories into it to hide them. ( I want to use ~ or something to separate from the others in Subcategories of Category:Japan. ) If I have time, I will arrange other prefectures. May I begin it? Tatata 02:18, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
- I will begin it today. Tatata 01:48, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
