Always
[edit] What should happen
Wiki markup should working in listing parameters (it's possible with some restrictions).
- In my opinion this is a feature, not a bug. Listings exist so that data can be easily parsed by machines and formatted. "name=X" means that the name of the place is "X", this is not the place for anything else. Jpatokal 12:59, 13 April 2008 (EDT)
[edit] How to fix it
[edit] Additional comments
This some comments why i want use Wiki markup in listing parameters. I want:
- use a template calls in "phone" parameter to same formating of phone numbers at whole project
- No, you should not being doing any formatting in the parameters. Enter the data, and the software formats them for you. If you are unhappy with the current appearance, then please describe what you want to do, and the listing tag code itself can be changed to make it happen. Jpatokal 12:59, 13 April 2008 (EDT)
- I create ru:Шаблон:phone to format a phone numbers in international form (i. e. {{phone|7|812|123-45-67}} &rarr +7 (812) 123-45-67). I plan to use it in "phone" parameters, but listing tag not allow this. -- Sergey kudryavtsev 04:01, 14 April 2008 (EDT)
- The logic in your template should be built into the listing tag itself. Jpatokal 07:03, 15 April 2008 (EDT)
- We are not able to satisfy every our need by listing functionality. In my opinion a template using is a good way to share functionality between listing and template. -- Sergey kudryavtsev 16:35, 15 April 2008 (EDT)

- use a links to Wikipedia in "name" or "alt" parameters to allow reader to see more detailed information at Wikipedia's articles
- A Wikipedia article is not the name or the alternative name of the place, so you should not be doing this. You can place those links in the body of the listing. Jpatokal 12:59, 13 April 2008 (EDT)
- There are many articles in Wikipedia about sights. A simplest and most natural way to refer is to make a link from place name. E.g. i want write so:
<see name="[[:wikipedia:Saint Isaac's Cathedral|Saint Isaac's Cathedral]]" alt="" address="Saint Isaac Square, 2" directions="" phone="{{phone|7|812|315-97-32}}" email="" fax="" url="http://eng.cathedral.ru/" hours="Thu-Tue, 11:00-19:00" price="">A short description of cathedral.</see>
-- Sergey kudryavtsev 04:01, 14 April 2008 (EDT)- The "natural" way to handle this would be to add a "wp" or "wikipedia" attribute that lets you add the WP link: <see name="Saint Isaac's Cathedral" alt="" address="Saint Isaac Square, 2" directions="" phone="Template:Phone" email="" fax="" url="http://eng.cathedral.ru/" wp="Saint Isaac's Cathedral" hours="Thu-Tue, 11:00-19:00" price="">A short description of cathedral.</see> Jpatokal 07:03, 15 April 2008 (EDT)

- Right, but I'm not sure that we should be linking wp articles from listings anyway, as they are clearly secondary sources. Sergey, why don't we discuss this a bit more on Russian Wikitravel before we go ahead with this particular addition to the licensing tags. --Peter Talk 14:42, 15 April 2008 (EDT)
- I suppose than Jpatokal only propose a way to refer Wikipedia article. (In my opinion "wp" or "wikipedia" is a right solution). Peter, i thinked than you agree with me at my talk page (section "Ссылки на Википедию"). Yes, such links should be interpreted as a secondary sources. But i see in this links a great utility to reader (as further reading about sights). A contributor's incentive must be achieved by administative arrangements but not by technical limitations. -- Sergey kudryavtsev 16:35, 15 April 2008 (EDT)
- Sure. I'm not saying we can't do this, but I'm saying that we should use the power of listings themselves, not template hacks. Jpatokal 03:07, 16 April 2008 (EDT)
- H-m-m, the power of listings, i don't sense this... User:Jpatokal, can you explain for me, how a data in listings will used in future (except a visualization in articles)? And why listings was realized exactly through tags? This seems as a side discussion, so you can answer me at my talk page. -- Sergey kudryavtsev 03:45, 16 April 2008 (EDT)
