Lots of CIA World Factbook maps in gif format (eg. en::Image:Jo-map.gif) seem to have suddenly disappeared off the server. Intentional or a mistake? I'll be running my auto-upload script to populate Wikitravel Shared with PNG versions of the CIA maps and flags this weekend, but somebody still needs to manually go through all the countries and check which ones link to '*.gif'... Weird. I see this file on the server, but I don't see it listed in the database. And I don't see it listed in any of the database backups. I wonder what the heck is going on here. I'm pretty sure the CIA Factbook upload did PNG maps. I can get a list of pages that link to *-map.gif, but I don't know why they were there before and aren't there now. --Evan 14:59, 31 March 2006 (EST)
Any updates? The auto-upload is on hold now because I couldn't manage to get pywikipedia to recognize that 'shared' is a valid namespace, and I have no clue what the issue is... Jpatokal 02:10, 28 April 2006 (EDT)
Interesting. Probably its the "family-wikitravel.py" that defines Wikitravel? Anyways, it seems that in 1.5.x and 1.6.x MediaWiki, images really need to be listed in the image database table to be used. I'm going to see if I can recover some of the old images that aren't in there (these gifs, and the broken "cartes" from fr:, which use combining Unicode characters (e + ' rather than é) in the names and thus are getting missed in lookups. I'm going to try and fiddle around with this a bit and see if I can fudge together some database stuff to make this work. --Evan 12:13, 28 April 2006 (EDT)
OK, so, the lost GIFs seem to be back in the DB again, so those maps should work once more. The French "cartes" are still broken, though, but that's called out in a different bug below. --Evan 15:38, 28 April 2006 (EDT)
