Tech:Copy image descriptions from shared

Moved from en:Wikitravel:Feature requests by Evan

MediaWiki has a feature to import image descriptions from a Commons into the language versions. It might be nice to use this feature so you don't have to click through to find image descriptions. However, this will require some fancy work on the caching system to make sure it either doesn't cache Image: pages for shared images, or if the Image: page changes on shared:, it clears the cache for all language versions for that page. --Evan 17:42, 6 July 2006 (EDT)

I get the en:MediaWiki:Sharedupload-box as intended, but not the information from Shared. In order to get the information, including the image description, I have to press the shared:Image:Sharedupload link in the box. I'd like the image information to show up, without having to take one step further. Riggwelter 05:36, 10 July 2006 (EDT)
I don't quite understand what you are asking here. Can you please explain it to me like I am 8 year old?  ;-) Thanks ! --Ibsteph 2:46 pm, 18 February 2010 (PST)
Images reside on Shared, in the "Image:" namespace. The other language wikis can link to images on Shared as if they were local files. When you click a thumbnail for a local image, you can see the image description page (like, say, Image:Map of New Hampshire Regions.png). But if you're on another wiki, when you click the thumbnail for an image hosted on Shared, you see this instead: en:Image:Map of New Hampshire Regions.png. Because the image isn't hosted locally, it brings up a "fake" image description page that contains only a link to the Shared version. That means you have to click twice to view the image's information (description, source, author, and licensing). LtPowers 19:29, 18 February 2010 (EST)
Thanks for the clarification. It seems that if it can pull the other information, it should be able to pull this as well. We'll investigate, but is this something that would be fixed when we upgrade mediawiki? IB-Dick 16:13, 22 February 2010 (EST)
No clue. You're the tech guy, not me. =) LtPowers 09:35, 23 February 2010 (EST)

Legal issues[edit]

I certainly don't think it's necessary that the descriptions be copied to language versions in order to fulfill our duties under the CC & GFDL licenses, but it's possible that image authors might see it differently, when they realize that their photo credit is buried two clicks deep. Finishing this tech request would put us on sounder legal footing. --Peter Talk 21:51, 23 September 2009 (EDT)
