Tech:Collection extension
From Wikitravel Shared
Wikitravel should install the MediaWiki Collection extension. Basically, this is a "bookmark a set of pages" function that you can use to assemble your very own travel guide:
This extension allows to organize personal selections of pages in a collection. Collections can be
- edited & structured using chapters
- persisted & loaded, shared
- rendered as PDF
- exported as ODF Text Document (.odt)
- exported as DocBook XML
- ordered as a printed book
The last of these would be done through Wikitravel Press, and it would mean that you can add (say) Istanbul, Dublin, and Cairo into your shopping basket, and we would then print a single guidebook covering all three.
Collections is planned to be rolled out on Wikipedia "soon", but in the meantime, you can see it live at eg. the OpenOffice.org wiki -- see "My Collections" in the left sidebar. For Wikitravel, I'd suggest putting it in the right sidebar instead. Jpatokal 01:29, 1 August 2008 (EDT)

- Would be a killing feature. --DenisYurkin 11:10, 1 August 2008 (EDT)
- In a good way, I hope? Jpatokal 08:11, 3 August 2008 (EDT)
- Definitely in a good way, sorry for ambiguity. --DenisYurkin 16:41, 3 August 2008 (EDT)
- What kind of further customization would you want/expect? Jpatokal 01:41, 10 August 2008 (EDT)
- Oh, of course it's going to reformat the content in the same way that existing WTP books do; it's not going to be the same as printing a web page. Jpatokal 07:09, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
- I like it very much. -- Mark 10:24, 27 August 2008 (EDT)
- We will try create a PDF version of this. I will send this to tech as request to work on. Thanks!-- Ibsteph 4:26 pm, 18 Feb 2010 (PST
- The update from tech is that WT is too big of site to implement this. I'm sorry.--Ibsteph 5:15 pm, 7 April 2010 (PST)
