Tech:Category article counts

From Wikitravel Shared

What[edit]

On Wikipedia, if you browse to a category, it shows you how many article and subcategories are lurking under it. We don't have this on Wikitravel, and thanks to the UNLOCODE spam it can make it very hard to find out where images are hiding and which ones are just empty.

I'm not sure how to enable this -- is it a Mediawiki core feature, optional setting or a 3rd-party extension? Jpatokal 06:44, 8 April 2009 (EDT)

Discussion[edit]

Is this not a built-in issue that already works? Not sure I understand the request. Feel free to add an image or so to illustrate your idea. On the other hand - is this an acute problem or should we simply close the ticket for now? Riggwelter 09:42, 10 August 2011 (EDT)

This should definitely stay open, as it is a feature that would greatly help navigation of Shared. For an example of what is requested, see wmc:Category:South_Sudan (or any category). The list of subcategories is at the top, as it is on our site, but all linked categories can be expanded (with the + button) to show what subcategories they have, and in parentheses state how many files and subcategories that category contains. Especially as our UNLOCODE gunk makes our category system overbuilt, this would be very useful here. --Peter Talk 16:41, 10 August 2011 (EDT)
