Tech:Auto-number headings feature affects page cache for all users

[edit] What happens
The feature "auto number section headers" under preferences/misc. does not work properly. Regardless of whether a user has the box checked or unchecked, they see the page according to the preference of the last user to cause the page cache to reset.
[edit] When it happens
When a user has caused the page to reset who has enabled "auto-number section headers," all users will see the page with numbered section headers. When a user has caused the page to reset who has disabled "auto-number section headers," all users will see the page without numbered section headers.
[edit] What should happen
This whole issue should be divorced from page caches—users should see only what they have enabled in their preferences.
[edit] How to fix it
One way to fix this would be to simply remove the option altogether. To my knowledge, I think only 2 contributors I have ever come across have used this feature, and it doesn't seem very useful to me at least.
[edit] Additional comments
One of the fixes tech is working on right now will feature new caching that will mean that logged in users' preferences will not affect the cache. JuCo 21:16, 18 March 2008 (EDT)
- Great. I'm looking forward to updates on the caching renovations. --Peter Talk 03:00, 21 March 2008 (EDT)
