Located approximately half way between Swan River, and Dauphin on Provincial Highway #10, this town today has a reduced population of around 150. In the 1950's Pine River had it's own hospital and several hotels. Farm service centers, auto-sales, hardware stores, theatre, food stores etc.

Like many small towns across North America, Pine River, MB has been shrinking. However this does not match it's potential.

Situated at the east side of Duck Mountain Provincial Park and the Duck Mountain Forest Reserve, just to the west, Pine River not only offers fine scenery, but makes a great retirement opportunity. It offers hunting lodges with their own websites and one American family has even built a loghome just east of town. Find this town on Google Earth and follow the road west into the parks. Of course GOOGLEEARTH STREETVIEW shows the town as of 2009.

The United Church still has a camp at Shingush Lake in the Duck Mountains. See their website.

This little town has several historic buildings such as several churchs and old stores.

Unfourtunately it's Railway Avenue which serves as the main street that was once lined with stores, etc. is now almost empty.

Other features include a retirement home and community center.

One of the largest bison ranches in the world is located just NE of town. Also many archaeological sites now dot the area from ancient burial grounds to a large concentration of bison bones. Pine River is also located in an area of undeveloped coal and oil resources. There are many beautiful large forests and meadows to be explored. There are of course opportunities for camera hunting of all large and small wildlife from hummingbirds to moose. The rare tiger lily, wild honeysuckle, strawberries and more that are so much more tastie than their domesticated cousins make this adventure more than worth it. Wild senecaroot (polygala senega) (used in convetional medicine) is also harvested in the area. Even wild apricot can be found.

Caution is to be exercised as mountain lion, wolf and bear are common in the countryside. Be prepared.

The area also has several X-PMU ranches with much opportunity to develop Bed & Breakfasts with scenic horse riding.

To a city person the entire area puts you in a holiday mood with it's natural parklike atmosphere.

If one comes from the south and takes the main entrance off of #10 one discovers that the town is actually about 20 feet lower than the highway. It is located in this low spot because the railway once was located here.

Original Log Cabins is an employer. With a website. Hunting lodges also have websites.

There is still a school in this town, but highschool students are bused to Ethelbert.

The town itself does not have a website.

There is no hotel in this town.

Provincial Road 271 at the north edge of town leads west to the park or east to Pulp River and to #20 highway

A steam engine that used to serve the rail line was converted to diesel at one point, and now is finely preserved at the south end of Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, Canada. Just a little east of the main entrance.

The tracks are long removed.
