ISLAND OVERVIEW: Barbados is the most easterly island of the Caribbean, just northeast of Venezuela. The island has year round sunshine with average temperatures in the 80s.

Barbados has 70 square miles of fine beaches, underground caverns, caves and sea pools. The flower forests, mangrove swamps, and caves are just some of the island’s natural wonders.

The island of Barbados is divided into eleven parishes which include: Christ Church, St Andrew, St George, St James, St John, St Joseph, St Lucy, St Michael, St Peter, St Philip, and St Thomas.

CAPITAL CITY: Bridgetown is the capital city, and located in the parish of St. Michael. Bridgetown is host to international banking/financial institutions, department stores, shops and the Port of Barbados. Visitors to Bridgetown during the day will find the bustling capital full of car and foot traffic. Broad Street is the center of duty free shopping where two of the largest department stores, Cave Sheppard and Harrison's can be found. Both stores also have smaller locations in other parishes on the island.

CURRENCY: The Barbados dollar is tied to the American dollar, and $1.98 BDS = $1.00 U.S. All prices on the island are quoted in BDS dollars. The majority of establishments accept major credit cards, and ATM's can be found throughout the island. American currency is accepted for transactions, however change will be given in BDS dollars. Americans coins ARE NOT accepted as legal currency on the island.

THE PEOPLE OF BARBADOS: Bajans" are some of the most friendly, helpful people you'll ever meet. They'll welcome you with open arms, and make you feel right at home. Bajan hospitality is one of the reasons visitors come back year after year.

Education is free in Barbados, and the literacy rate among Bajans is 97%, thus making the islands labor force one of the best in the Caribbean.

Generations of Bajans have shared the love of travel, and you will find many who are very well traveled, or who have relatives around the world. It is a well known fact that you can always find a Bajan anywhere in the world.

RELIGION: There are many different religions on the island with Anglican being the most popular. The constitution allows for freedom in religious practice, and you will also find Protestant, Catholic, and Pentecostal.

ACTIVITIES: Barbados offers an array of historical sites, island tours, island cruises, sporting events, nightlife, festivals, and cultural events.

VISITORS: Most visitors to Barbados are from England, Canada, the Scandanavian countries, and U.S visitors from the eastern seaboard. It is not unusual for tourists to stay 30 - 60 days.
