Since he was a young lad, Barndoor has been interested in road maps and highway engineering. He was fascinated with the design and construction of the interstate highway system, and urged his parents, while on road trips, to detour and try out new sections of highway as they opened.

As he grew older, these interests matured and evolved into the areas of transportation system efficiency and cartography.
