Kilkenny is a city of 8,625 in the South East of Ireland.

Kilkenny is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland as well a weekend getaway for many Irish citizens. Well regarded for its vibrant nightlife it has become increasingly popular in recent years. The city is also famous for its many mediƦval buildings and is referred to as the "Marble City." Despite its small population, it holds ancient city status due to having a cathedral. The locals do not take kindly to the city being referred to as a "town".

Kilkenny is 80 miles from Dublin Airport and is reached by a branch off the main Dublin-Waterford road. It is 90 miles from Cork or Shannon. Train service from Dublin (Heuston Station) and Waterford. Bus Eireann and JJ Kavanagh operate buses from Busaras and St. Georges Quay respectively in Dublin to Kilkenny. JJ Kavanagh operates direct services from Dublin Airport.

  • The magnificent Castle is the principal attraction.
  • St Canices Cathedral and Rothe House Museum also worth a visit.
  • Brewery, home of Smithwicks and Kilkenny Beer can be visited in centre of city.

  • Try and catch a Hurling match. Kilkenny are perennial Irish champions.
  • Cat Laughs Comedy Festival, [1]. First weekend in June annually. An annual comedy festival. It was first held in 1995 and usually runs over the first weekend in June. Many famous faces have appeared at it over the years including Bill Murray, Lewis Black, Rich Hall, Dom Irrera, Mike Wilmot, Dan Castellaneta, Doug Stanhope and David Cross. The festival includes stand-up comedy performances and has a film component called Kitty Flicks.There is also a traditional soccer match held on the Sunday afternoon between the Irish comedians and those from the rest of the world.

Plenty of crafts throughout the county - leather, glass, pottery. Visit The Kilkenny Shop opposite the castle for a full range of products.

Plenty of restaurants including Chez Pierre, Fleva, Zuni, and Cafe Sol. Marble City for good bar food.

Try the pubs on Parliament Street for a local flavour. John Street for the younger, clubbing crowd.
