Bihar [1] is among India's poorest states. It lies on the Gangetic plain, with Uttar Pradesh to its east, West Bengal to its west and Nepal to its north. Jharkhand, the mineral-rich tribal belt, was part of the state, but in 2001, it was split to form its own state.

Bihar has a justified reputation for being the most dangerous place in India. Kidnapping is an industry here. Anyone showing signs of affluence is at risk of being abducted for ransom. There are few sit-down restaurants here, allegedly because those who have money do not risk flaunting their wealth. Avoid venturing out in the night time, travel only in groups and keep a low profile here.

Trains traveling through Bihar are more prone to theft, it's wise to lock your luggage to the seat in the carriage and keep more aware than usual.
