La partie de New York appelé Harlem regroupe les quartiers de Manhattan au nord de la 96e rue, et rejoint le nord de Manhattan appelé Washington Heights.

Le village originel de Harlem a été fondé en 1658 par le gouverneur Peter Stuyvesant et l'a appelé Nieuw Haarlem d'après la ville néerlandaise de Haarlem. Il avait alors baptisé la ville de New York: New Holland, appelant ainsi un de leur quartier Harlem, endroit où se regroupaient les colons Haarlemois.
