Mafia Island

Located in the magnificent southern circuit of Tanzania and Zanzibar and is part of a fascinating array or parks, reserves and Indian Ocean islands. The coral reefs, bays, sand bars, lagoons and beaches of the Mafia Archipelago are part of the Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzanian´s first marine national park.

Fewer then a thousand visitors a year come here so it remains very much a traditional Swahili Coast destination and really can lay claim to the worn title of “unspoilt”…….

Mafia is the destination for those who truly wish to “get away from it all” and enjoy superlative accommodation, ambience, cuisine and service.

After two decades of a love affair with Mafia we are still discovering new reefs, beaches and picnic locations, previously unrecorded birds, plants, fish and corals, new dive and snorkel sites….and we continue developing new excursions and activities for guests to enjoy our “ISLAND LIFE”

Mafia is a complete island, beach and underwater Indian Ocean experience in a single destination…..and everything is on our doorstep…well doorsteps, since we can now offer the very best of Mafia at Kinasi Lodge on Chole Bay - for the magnificent reefs, sand bars and islets - and at Lua Cheia Castaway Beach Camp at Ras Bweni, where miles and miles of white beach lapped by the clear waters of the ocean await you.

6 Reason why we love Mafia[editar]

We love Mafia because it is so natural and unaffected by the many negative effects of modern life, especially when tourism has a major impact !

Friendly people are one of the greatest attractions on any holiday and you will soon realise that, as for all of East Africa, the people of Mafia are extremely friendly, self-confident but humble, and always ready for a laugh. A lasting memory you will take away is how happy and spontaneous people are.

The terrestrial and reef ecosystems are fascinating and over the years we have spent a great deal of time to research these aspects of the islands and ensure that our snorkeling and scuba trips give visitors an unforgettable experience. The diving here is truly World-class with a vast variety of corals and fish; being a breeding ground the Bay is alwayss full of shoals of fish.

And to enhance your stay with us we have guided walks and nature trails to enjoy the native trees, animals and birdlife, cultural visits to villages to understand local village life and watch skilled craftsmen at work, sailing in traditional dhows and ngalawas, and fantastic day picnic trips to outer islands, sand banks and beaches.

The Mafia Archipelago hosts antiquities dating back to the Eleventh Century, including ruins at Kisimani Mafia, Kanga, Kua on Juani Island and Chole Island. These include a beautiful, barrel-vaulted mosque of the Fifteenth Century and a number of well-preserved buildings of the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, providing great interest for the methods of construction and the ancient architecture. We make guided excursions to examine these for those interested in history, ancient trade and the promise of new discoveries.

Scuba diving and snorkeling

Mafia Island and its reefs are renowned as an excellent, world-class diving destination. Scientists have confirmed that Mafia has some of the richest reefs in the world, with an unparalleled variety of hard and soft corals and diversity of tropical fish. We have identified fabulous dive sites of immense beauty and richness, bommies, channels, walls and caverns, drift and night dives. All of this is available to you through our PADI dive centre.

Active Relaxation

Mafia is the place for “active relaxation” and at Kinasi and Lua Cheia we have tried to think of everything: swimming pool, scuba and snorkel, fishing, windsurfing, kayaking and mountain bikes, guided excursions to cultural and historic sites, bird-watching and marine nature walks, picnics on isolated islets and beaches, road safaris to explore the north of the island with overnight camping options, boat excursions….all accompanied by superb food, a cocktail bar and wine cellar of note, and a therapy centre offering a wide range of relaxation and therapy treatments. We don't think we have failed to imagine any other comforts and services one might need on a holiday…and it is our goal to make sure that we are the best small hotel in Tanzania and the most personalised.

Peaceful Place

Most of all Mafia is wonderfully peaceful and calming and a perfect place to find your feet again….

It may be realized by now, that tourists looking for night life, Mafia is not the place to come! Unless of course you wish to include night dives, dinners on the beach, star-gazing...'
