Yuzhno-Kurilsk

Yuzhno-Kurilsk (Russian: Южно-Курильск; Japanese: 古釜布 Furukamappu) population: 7.800, is the main town of the Kuril islands, in Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. It's located on the mouth of the Sevebryanka river at the Yuzhno-Kurilsky cape, on Kunashir island - or 'Black Island' in the indigenous Ainu language. There is little to see in this city, which was severely damaged by a Tsunami in 1994. But the surrounding area, hosts one of the worlds most unique natural environments - complete with free roaming bears and wild horses.

- By plane
SAT airlines[1] operates flights to and from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk 3 times per week, out of Mendeleyevo Airport (ICAO: UHSM), located 20 kilometers outside Yuzhno-Kurilsk.
- By boat
One or two times every month in summer, there is a ferry service connecting to Korsakov on Sakhalin island. At the time of writing there were a schedule available on sakh.com[2].
