This article is a travel topic.

Despite what you may think, Australia DOES have a Winter Sports industry. The season is not very long compared to more 'favorable' climes, but Australians take full advantage of what they've got, extending the natural ski season with snow machines, etc.

The major skifields are found in Victoria and New South Wales and Tasmania. There is not a lot of snow in New South Wales or Victoria outside of the limited mountainous areas, but Tasmania is located much further south and has more extensive snows during the winter, which make for excellent winter hiking and cross-country skiing.

In News South Wales and Victoria the ski season traditionally begins on the Queen's birthday long weekend (the second Monday in June is a public holiday). However the most reliable snowfalls are in July and August. In good seasons there will be some lifts open in June, September and sometimes early October.
